Buy it off ebay and technically it's illegal. I would say from experience that Works is actually better than Office - less bugs and macro vulnerabilities and yes, Open Office is the best Open Source software for nothing...

Technically why is it illegal, it might be if I said buy a pirate verion.

Whats the problem with buying the real thing that someone happens to be selling on eBay.

However the important thing is the person worried about office needs to face reallity and for that money they are not going to get a copy of office chucked in from anybody.

This is the cheapest that I found, £425.14+VAT

But it comes with 2GB RAM and a 250GB HDD

the whole point of outlet is that the machines vary every hour, so its worth checking regularly as a similar machine could be half that price the next time you check

Just kidding, there is no need to spend money on Office software, you can download OpenOffice from https://www.openoffice.org - it looks and feels like a professional office suite and as it's open source, it is continually being updated.

If you find a system that you feel is suitable for you, you really need not worry about software any longer, there are so many free alternatives out there that are often as good as, and in some instances better than, their retail counterparts.

Lol, you aswell Ive been in Techie about https://www.openoffice.org :D

It's illegal to sell on Office software "second hand". It can only be registered once to the original purchaser. A new, sealed, unregistered disc would be fine but if you buy software second hand on ebay it will already be registered and you may well have problems when you install it and find you have to activate it by online registration - Microsoft will have it on record as already being registered and you may not be able to activate it. That's why I mentioned it :)

Open Office is very, very good. You can save as *.doc files which is useful, but more so is the possibility to save as *.pdf (i.e. Adobe Acrobat) format, which I use all the time. I do use MS Office for presentations though (i.e. PowerPoint), because the Presentation software in Open Office ain't all that great, but the spreadsheet and word processor are v good, along a similar format to Office so not much to worry about on that front.

While we're on the subject, I've ditched IE now for Firefox, which I find infinitely easier to use and the add-ins are great - I can search Google, Yell.com, Wikipedia, Yahoo, OED, Amazon etc from a drop down list within the browser, which saves oodles of time. You can add whichever search engines you like from a list on the Firefox web site.

Don't buy into the software industry's propaganda. You have bought the software, you have bought the license. If the original owner continues to use them then it is they, not you, who are breaking the law.

Not interested in propaganda, just practicalities - You're the one who loses if you buy second hand software and you can't activate it...

Yep this is 100% correct

If you get a dodgy secondhand disc thats already activated forget any updates and free help from Microsoft, if you buy a MS product they will let you have 3 calls to support for free after that its £48.00 each, so with a dodgy disc you cant even get the 3 free calls, just not worth it.

    Buy Genuine or Open Office.
