The first thing to check is whether or not they connect when plugged into the same extension strip - if that doesn't work then there are two possibilities - one or both are busted or at some point somebody set one or other up with a password stopping them talking. If you find they won't talk on the same strip hunt down the utility either on the CD you got with them or on the web - it is the same one for all brands - and reset the network id and passwords.
As I said originally if the ones you have are working but won't communicate across rings then buying a different brand isn't going to fix it.0 -

Could there be a firmware or software implication (fields in which I have no idea whatsoever)?
Looking at the ZyXEL website here, it talks about "Advanced configuration and analysis software is available on the CD" which may help you diagnose your particular problem. As others have stated they're 'Plug&Go' and just work out of the box. It may be that you have some localised interference, although I would doubt it as they can normally work up to 300 meters away. Check the LED's and troubleshooting section in the user guide (page 31) and if you are still having problems, then contact their support. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0
