AVG - Avira co-existence?

Are these two antivirus programmes in any way antagonistic?

I am thinking of installing AVG alongside my current Avira, at least temporarily, to deal with a problem.

I am running Vista basic.

Get rid of AVG, and install avira, it's much better, apart from the nag screen. Can't see how having 2 AV's is going to solve a problem, it will just slow your pc down.

Never install two antivirus programs on the same PC - at best they will fight each other for resource, slow down the PC, and neither will probably work right - at worst, it will totally trash the PC and you will need to reinstall windows (especially if one is Norton).

Yet again the question asked has not been answered by the previous poster!

I was waiting for a smart !!!! to come along, still waiting, as you haven't answered it either. Shouldn't isn't the same as can't.

You can run 2 resident AV's at once. As already pointed out, I wouldn't advise it, whether the 2 in question work together I don't know, do you?

Probably the riskiest thing is that each will detect the other's virus signatures and try to lock each other up in their vaults.

I don't know if that is so or not but I do know that every piece of advice I've ever read on this topic says don't run more than one AV at a time. So I haven't and don't know for sure what would happen if I tried it. Not wanting to spend half the night restoring my PC I don't think I'll bother to try and find out.

Misread post - life sometimes gets in the way of concentration.

Your opinion was not asked for either.

You can disable the nag screen that appears when you update Avira. The method varies depending upon which version of Windows you are using:

Out of interest, can these online scanners be used even if you have software like avira installed?

My other question relates to the fact that I'm using Chrome as a my main browser and I believe most of these online thingies insist on IE. Is this a problem?

Yes they can, but they often leave crap all over the pc.

You'll still have IE installed, so if it is, you can just use IE to scan.

No, they don't clean up after themselves, so you will probably be left with activex files, and often temp files and directories on the hard disk, harmless but unnecessary.
