JSA & Holiday Abroad ?

Ok Quick question, If you have a holiday you booked & paid for while working 6 months before becoming redundant ... and you decide to still take it than lose money in cancellation fees and get stress release. I know you lose 2 weeks JSA but do you also lose council tax & housing benefit ? even though you have no income for this period ?

Do they take the view your going on holiday so you have to pay full council tax & rent for the 2 weeks while away ?

Thanks in advance ...

  • I think you are allowed two weeks holiday whilst on JSA but I am not sure that it can be abroad as in theory you have to be ready to start week immediately in both cases. I would imagine if you lose your JSA you would lose the other stuff too.

I would just enjoy the holiday :) I was made redundant in March this year and would have jumped at the chance JSA or no JSA I needed a break

You can claim LHA?HB and CTB even when you're working so I'm fairly sure that you don't lose it if you're away on holiday.

Yep, these benefits are purely means-tested. If you have no income, then that's it. Check with the CT people to be on the safe side and be prepared for a bit of form-filling as the JSA are likely to inform the CT people of the break in the claim.

Raja, I know that you have no intention of not disclosing this trip abroad to the JSA people but another contributor had suggested this and this is why the board guide has stepped in.

For the benefit of anyone else reading this thread, UK airports have recently posted up large posters warning "benefit fraudster" (as they call them) of the risks involved in going abroad.

It would be a simple matter for the JSA people to cross-check names and DOBs with the information held by the border people from scanned passports.

    Board Guide Comment

Please can posters stick to helping the OP keep within the law rather than discussing how they can get around the rules, this forum does not advocate posters discussing otherwise thanks.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: Sorry, your post had to be deleted as we had a couple of emails about it and site policy is to err on the side of caution (please see this rule). If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com

I wasnt suggesting he didnt declare it, i meant even if it meant he had to live without JSA it would be worth the holiday, not that he should go and not say anything.

I am quite offended that people thought I was suggesting he should do that when I was clearly wishing him a good holiday even if it meant he had to go without his benefit for two weeks, as being someone who has recently lost their job myself, I would be prepared to go without JSA for two weeks and declare it because losing your job is incredibly stressful

    Thank you :)

I absolutely endorse the board guide's post above. It was someone else who suggested chicanery (boy, I am pleased with that one!) and nothing at all was intended to you or your fine post offering superlative advice.
