as far as I know it is illegal yes...

technically, that would probably also mean any player that buffers a cd was infringing copyright, like those CD players that buffer x number of seconds so it does not skip when you are jogging....

Its unclear rules like this (and unfair rules in some eyes, if they are true) , and DRM on certain music sites (do Itunes still have DRM in their downloads?) which deters people from going 'legal'.

Which brings me to another question - why has no one admitted to downloading 100% illegally :D
  • I've not always downloaded legally, but that was quite a few years ago now, so I think I qualify for Answer A again now :)

I find it's more beneficial to me in the long term to be downloading off iTunes, as I get my Nectar points and I use Quidco so every album counts for me. Saying that, nothing really beats getting that CD you've waited ages for in your mitt :)

When there are plenty of royalty free tunes you can download for free, legally.
Some of the music is bad but there is a lot of good stuff out there.
It does not take long to find good free music.
  • I didn't know that it was illegal to purchase a CD and then download it to a personal MP3 player.

How stupid! Why isn't iTunes shut down then, or the software that allows CD's to be uploaded to a computer? Genuinely astonished! I'm not selling it on or anything, so no sale is prevented by downloading onto MP3.

Anyway, now that I know it's illegal - well, there you go...

Is there anyone who buys a CD and doesn't download it to MP3? Would love to hear.

  • I usually just do singles for downloads but if I want an album I go to my local library and get them to order it in for me I have to wait a few weeks for it. but seeing as I'm not in a great rush I don't mind waiting.

The cost are 25p to reserve each item and £1.00 to hire the disk for the week (I have 2 on order!)

I also do this with books I am currently reading the latest Stephen King one (under the dome) paid my 25p to order it and I get to keep it for 3 weeks and that way I'm not stuck with a book that I can't get any money back on.
Don't forget you can donate 24 Felix tokens to help feed a cats protection cat/kitten that's in care
their are loads of cats/kittens awaiting there forever home
don't forget the the oldies who are just as much fun

Dropping a brand going great :D thanks Martin and team
  • Another thought on the question of "illegal" copies ...

So you download an mp3 track to your computer, and pay for it. Fine - that's legal so far. Then you copy it to your mp3 player to play on your way to work. Is that an illegal copy?

To me, there's no difference between paying for a track on a CD you've bought and paying for an mp3 download. A copy from your purchase is either legal or illegal for both.

Personally I download any free legal mp3s offered from sites, labels etc. This means I generally find interesting music that I would not have otherwise. And if I like the artist/band/DJ enough i'll buy an album on CD or Vinyl.

Any other music I want or need I will copy from CDs. Sorry if this has been said before but it is worth noting when talking about mp3/video downloading or copying...

A portion of all blank CD-R/CD-RW/DVD-Rs cost goes directly to the PRS, who then pay all composers, artists, labels etc. This is designed to cover "losses" from downloading mp3s for free and people copying each other's CDs. Another thing worth noting is that most of the largest websites involved in streaming music and video for free are in fact part owned (in-directly) by the big four major media companies i.e. Sony BMG, EMI etc

Also it's worth thinking about what you're actually paying for when purchasing an mp3. Encoded data basically, which has a tiny real life manufacturing and production cost. Then what happens if you're hard drive dies?

For me my conscience is clear...

Thats a good point, you would have to check the legal terms and conditions of the site you download from to ensure they allow you to transfer (copy) it to another device after downloading.
