Eon / Tesco Clubcard Points Cop-out

As I picked the mail off the mat this morning, a small insignificant looking card fell from my grasp and landed back on the floor. This turned out to be from either Eon or Tesco, or both - I'm still not sure - and had it not fell from my grasp I suspect that it would have ended up in the recycling bin along with the other junk mail.

Anyway, this is how the card reads...

Quote:

Let us know if you'd like to keep collecting Clubcard points with E.ON

It's been a while since you started collecting Clubcard points through your E.ON energy bills. So we thought we'd take the time to see if you're still interested.

If you'd like to keep collecting Clubcard points with E.ON, simply take the coupon below to your nearest Tesco and swipe it at the checkout along with your Clubcard. That way you'll continue to receive Clubcard points and help save yourself money on your shopping. You'll find other great ways to collect points and more ways to spend your vouchers at www.tesco.com/clubcard

So remember, to keep collecting points with E.ON, you must scan the coupon below in-store by 31/12/09. Thank you!

Unquote.

Well how very thoughtful of them (not!).

In other words this is a cynical ploy to pare down the number of people collecting E.ON/Tesco points, by craftily sending the cards out with the Christmas mail, allowing only three weeks to present the coupon and insisting that this be done in person at a Tesco store.

Ok so there is a Tesco store across town from me but such are local traffic problems that it could easily take one hour there and back. On top of that I am actively avoiding driving at the moment as I have a DVT in my leg. No doubt I will be able to get there somehow but what about the less able bodied and indeed the people who mistake the card for junk mail as I nearly did. Not only that, not everyone has a local Tesco store but they could still have a Clubcard especially if - as mine is - it is linked to their non-region specific Tesco credit card.

Both E.ON and Tesco are in regular communication with me via email so why send this important message in the post, or more pertinently only send it via post.

I registered my Clubcard with E.ON quite a while ago - as they point out - and thus I get one point for every pound spent which is double what recent registrants get. Thus I tend to accrue around £12.50 in voucher face value per year which is worth £50 when spent with Tesco 'partners' (@ 4 times face value) so this is not to be sniffed at and this is no doubt why both Tesco and E.ON want to cut down on points recipients.

All the same it stinks doesn't it?

So, if you or anyone you know collects Tesco points via E.ON, don't forget that we have only another three weeks or so to present ourselves at the Tesco in-store checkout like good little soldiers.

  • Thanks for this. I am with eon, but get my points added automatically, which are on my monthly statement. I will look out for the letter.

Yes that's the mysterious part of it. My points are added automatically too and all I have ever needed to do is register the Clubcard in the first place.

I think Tesco/E.ON have called this completely wrong. If they genuinely want to update their records why not give people a local rate/freephone number to call and make it a voluntary or extra points incentivized arrangement?

    Hi Guys,

I've looked into this today, and can confirm that this mailing campaign is being carried out by Tesco Club Card.

If anyone has any questions for Tesco regarding this, the team at Tesco Club Card can be reached on 0800 591 688.

    Thanks Brian,

I have to say that the origin of the 'postcard' is rather ambiguous from the wording/graphics but it is in Tesco's colours.

I'm wondering if the OP shops at Tesco, possibly if they don't, or have not used any of their vouchers then this generated the letter??
That gum you like is coming back in style.

Ah yes, it may be that the Clubcard is otherwise inactive?

I am both an Eon customer and a Tescoholic and haven't seen one of these cards in the post (yet). Will watch out for it though.

    The plot thickens!

I have just spoken to the Tesco Clubcard helpline on the number kindly provided above by Brian, but after much investigation Tesco say that they don't know anything about this mailing and directed me instead to speak to E.ON which I have just done.

In turn, E.ON also say that they know nothing at all about this and agree with me that it is a ridiculous concept anyway given the mandatory requirement to physically visit a Tesco store to have the card and Clubcard swiped.

So the question now is who is responsible for this campaign and since both E.ON and Tesco have denied all knowledge do I really need to go to Tesco by 31st December or not?

I don't suppose by any chance there are any Tesco 'official representatives' on this forum are there? If so perhaps they would like to comment.

PS: I am more than happy to post a photo of the offending card if required, and if that is permissible, just so you don't think I'm making it up.;)

PPS I have now scanned a copy of the mailshot into an email to Tesco so thought I would post a link to the image here as well...

  • I noticed this with EDF and Nectar Points too, you have to periodically re-apply for the offer or you mysteriously lose the few hundred points you get per quarter. Very crafty but I suspect it pares down the cost of running the offer. At least I don't have to go to Tesco to do it though...

    Regards,
    Jason.

    Hi Spuance,

I’m sorry the agents you spoke to weren’t aware of this campaign yet. I know here at E.ON the document about this was sent to our employees on Monday, however I know that not everyone will have been briefed by their line managers immediately.

Due to the nature of this case, I have managed to find a liaison over at Tesco, and if you email me your Tesco Club Card number to my email address, I can make arrangements for you club card file to be updated as though you had swiped the voucher in store.

  • Hi Brian,

Will all Tesco/EON customers be recieving this card?
