For DH's first Father's Day, we made a t-shirt with DD's footprints on it, and the slogan "I walk all over my Dad". He adored it.

Definitely something with handprints or footprints would be a great momento, and can be very cheap.

As a picture, use cheap poster paint (can get bottles for maybe £2) and a handful of paper plates. Dollop paint onto plates, lay out lots of newspapers on ground, with the "proper" paper for the masterpiece on top (have a good few sheets to be able to practise), and have a basin of warm water and towels on standby. Have fun messing around, get a few photos if you can also, and then get cleaned up. Make the results into a card and frame the best for the wall.

Or get fabric paints and, practise first on some paper and then make an apron ("A helping Hand for Mummy") or a t shirt or something. Still probably less than £10 all told - although you can spend more if wanted.
