You should def make a claim for tax credits, initially it will be base don last year's earnings and may show a small or NIL award. Once you receive your award you can call the helpline and they can amend this year's estimated income and have pymts started. Get the form asap - they only backdate 3 months.
Childcare - you won;t qualify unless your partenr receives disability living allowance or ESA/Incap benefit. You may be able to claim help through the uni or department for education and skills.
