sky+ and telephone line

I am waiting on installation of sky+ and have just noticed that it states I need to have the box connected to a telephone line - I don't have a socket in the living room where the box will be and I'm wondering if it is actually totally necessary to have it connected to the phone all the time?

sky will run a phone extension for you, bear in mind tho they will clip it all round ur skirting boards door frames etc, there not supposed to drill thru internal walls, although they av been known toWannabe DFW NERD: Not fully fledged member yet !

Thanks for the reply - I suppose that would be ok - its just I asked my friend who has sky and she says hers is not connected to the phone line (its not sky+ though so maybe thats the difference).0

You don't really need it although it does state in the contract you are required to for the first 12 months."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0

Within the SKY contract you agree to connect the box permanently to the phone line for 12 months - supposedly to encourage you to use the BoxOffice and interactive functions both of which rely on using the phone to upload information.
When the engineer installs the sky box, he has to initiate a 'call back' which basically gets the box to send back all its details to SKY and allows sky to enable your viewing card etc - for this it required access to a live phone cable.
Sky engineer will install an extension (within reason) - but as mentioned previously this is a basic extension cable that they will cable clip either onto or above your skirting board - they are not known for thier finesse...
BTW SKY+ has its issues but it really will transform the way you watch TV... (I'm catching up on LOST Season 2 as I write this ...).0 -
You can now have it installed without the phone line although this would cost a £25 charge0

I had a prat of an engineer install mine, he put our old box in the bedroom for the multiroom and left it on the floor to the left of the TV where it was gonna be right in the way when I got outta bed. He left the phone cable so short that I couldn't move the box anywhere else, the cable to the outside was also too short to move the box anywhere else. I had to phone them up and get a man back the following week to give me ample cable (what they laid was less than 1.5 m)
The ample cable really was ample and a few weeks later my toddler pulled the phone cable out by accident and I didn't notice as there was already a big line of it on the floor. I got a letter from Sky regarding one of my boxes not being connected and breaking the T&C.The best things in life are NOT free - but they sure are cheaper with MSE!:j0 -
Hi
We have been told by Sky that both our sky+ boxes must be connected to the phone line for the length of the subscription, not just 12 months. They say that the terms have been altered. Because our second box is not always connected to the phone they are going to charge us an extra £26 per month, making it £72 per month.
Has anyone else had this problem?

I havent heard of them changing the terms but if you ever get any other discounted installation like multi room then they sign you up for another 12 month contract.
Whilst I have only ever heard of one or two cases they can recover costs for breach of contract if you do not keep it plugged into the phone line which basically is the remainder of the 12 month contract at full price, the full cost of the box and full cost of the installation.
The more common one which they catch people on is the old move address and get your missus/ g/friend/ neighbour to put it in their name rather than yours but you run the same riskAll posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers

just ring them up and tell them you are having sky+ installed on
and you dont have a telephone line and they will just say that is ok, some of my friends said that and they didnt have to pay £25! you only need a telephone line if you are using interactive services or have sky multiroomThings that are free in life are great, well most of the time :beer:0 -
We had our sky+ connected 11 months ago, like you have no phone socket in the room, so i purchased an extension cable from a pound shop.
The extension cable i kept loose, not pinning it to skirting boards and when the engineer left just unplugged it.
In 11 months i've never had anything from sky about not being connected to a phone line. I just can't use dial-up services from the sky+ box, which suits me fine.0
