will we ever have 'naked DSL'

like some countries have, where a line goes into your house for Broadband only. It annoys me to think I need to pay so much per month for a landline that I effectively never use. I appreciate that someone would need to maintain the line, but paying £10upwards per month to be usign the line only for 'data' is ridiculous in this day and age....
£4988 Lloyds TSB Mastercard
£400 O/D Lloyds TSB
£2650 Lloyds TSB Loan
£5070 Black Horse Finance

Skint, but I have a plan.... an MSE Plan!!!

All the time BT own the last mile, I can't see it happening, to be honest. They need to fill the pension gap some how.

    is it DSL or cable...;)

IIRC with VM they supply just the cable modem service, but it's slightly more than if you went with internet and phone (cable has the phone and internet/TV coming down a paired line).

I don't think we're going to get "naked" DSL in the UK until companies stop relying on BT to provide the final line to the house, as that line can be very costly to maintain.
That cost doesn't change if you're just using it for the internet, or for internet and voice.

If anything it is more costly for internet as some faults don't show on voice but do stop internet from working.

It will be donkies years before BT become irrelevant for broadband as none of the wireless technologies can currently compete with wired (or fibre when it arrives) and there simply isn't the return on investment to install a competing last mile network.

Yeah seems there are a number of cost implications - but naked dsl would be nice
