It's been a while since we last had plastering done but the quote I got today has really shocked me. The quote is to plaster 2 rooms including ceilings one is 12x11 (about 7t high ceiling) with a 7ft x 4ft window and a fireplace to plaster around (2 razor beads required)and with one door. The other is about 15 x 12 with one door, a large 7ft x 4ft window at one end and a small 3ft x4ft window and one of the shorter walls not being done. There is one small area that is a bit blown but the plasterer said it isn't too bad so should be able to put something on it and it will be fine. He has allowed or stabliser over the entire large room walls. Generally though the walls are in good nick just not good enough to paint. He said the total cost of plaster etc would be £100 and labour would be £1,100. This seemed really high to me but as I say it has been a long time since we had a plasterer in.

We live in Essex and he doesn't have much work on because he could start at the end of next week. What do you think of the quote?

That sounds pretty reasonable to me. We had our bedroom replastered early in the summer. The ceiling was in a poor condition and he had to plasterboard it first. He also putting up plaster coving and the whole job came to approx. £600.00. We live in north London. We thought it a very fair price. It only took him 2 days and he had his son helping him. He did a great job and we were very happy with the result.
  • Did your plasterer supply all materials including plasterboard and coving?

That's more than I paid recently (a few weeks ago). I live in Essex too and as far as I know my plasterer is willing to travel all over the county. If you want his details send me a PM and I'll send you his contact details.

From what you have stated in your messgae. Price seems roughly the going rate. I am just starting plastering and I have worked the figues out to be £1058 with the formula we got taught to charge. So difference would appear to be just the profit.

In short I dont think you getting ripped off, and seems fairly reasonable.
If you see a penny, pick it up, all day long you'll have good luck !!!!!! :D
  • I've just been working out a price for a similar job.The m2 is slightly less, but including materials my price comes to £1000,and i was worrying that i was overpricing the job!(N.E. England)

seems ok for the essex area.
we paid 680 quid for a complete lounge, (very big room), plus very small wall in the kitchen.
it took him four days. i thought he was a bit slow?

Not entirely true. Anyone can have a lull in thier work from time to time. Sometimes you may have something booked in which then gets changed, leaving you with a gap in the diary...;)

My brother used this plasterer so I have seen his work which seems good. I wondered if he was quiet because he was a bit expensive but maybe that isn't the case.

You're quite right shirl. It may not be the case and you've seen his work.

I had a kitchen install booked for next week, the client called me today to say it's on hold because the bank won't lend her the money. I now need to try and pull another job forward to fill next week up. This is not always possible if the client has made plans around the date I gave. Therefore, I may have little to do next week - it happens...;)
