The box shouldn't need an ariel to scan channels...haven't you had that screen up yet?
In menu it's usually an option ..or box settings or some other litte area there.

The post advising using a main TV that works on freeview ariel is good...set it up on that, then try the portable ariel (some do work, many don't).

If you shop around (local paper is good) you may get an ariel for 50 or 60 quid fitted, several guys round here do that and are reliable.

A simple Y splitter or better still a booster assisted splitter from the main telly point to the new one will be cheaper, but not as good quality as a seperate ariel.

The guy in the shop did lie..if he sold you the portable ariel take it back and tell him he should know the odds of that working were tiny and he should gamble with his own cash not yours. It's really annoying when this kind of thing happens and you can't get freeview boxes to work...and it's his fault.

You WILL need an aerial to scan for channels, as you need to pick up a signal ! How else will it tune in to anything ?

A good main aerial through an amplified splitter will be fine - you should never need a seperate aerial for multi point installations.

Of course you need an aerial/signal, otherwise the receiver will have nothing to scan.

BTW, it is aerial, not ariel, that is washing powder.;)

A while ago, I bought a dvd recorder with freeview. I can get some channels, but not all and the picture is blurred although it is clear enough to watch, just difficult sometimes to set the recorder.
Since retuning for the digital switchover, I can't get or record ITV1, channel 4 or 5 on my dvd although I can still get them on the tv.
I only have an ordinary aerial. My house is three storey, so it would be expensive to get someone to go up and fit or reposition the aerial I have. Would it help to get one of those signal boosters?
If I had a new aerial fitted, would the engineer have to come into the house or could they do it while I'm at work, ie would they be able to use the wire that already connects the existing aerial or would they need to rewire it?

    TIA
  • I had the same problem as oddjob using a Humax recorder. Eventually discovered that the missing channels had been moved to the 800s on the freeview menu during the digital switch over. Box kept looking for the original channel numbers when retuned. The solution is to go into the setup menu, delete the original channel numbers and then move the missing channels back from their new position at the end of the list - in my case I had to create a new favorites list to get the channels I wanted in the correct order. Since then I have helped a number of friends as this is a common problem with older equipment, the newer boxes seem to sort themselves out.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks, Not sure how you move the channels about though, will have to have a look when I have a bit of time to spare.
My DVD recorder isn't old though, I had it less than a year ago. Its a Panasonic VHS/DVD recorder with Freeview.

I couldn't get all the channels before the switch over either, but could usually get the ITV and Channel four.
