First you'll need to point the aerial in the direction of the transmitter, then go through the setup menu (look for 1st time setup option) and see if it can detect any channels

Video will give you a general idea what to do:-

Can you plug the Freeview box into an aerial somewhere else, preferably with one that is known to receive the channels, so that you can tune it in? Then you could plug it into your daughter's aerial and see if moving it around will produce a picture. Also, the Freeview box should display information about the strength and quality of the signal it is receiving.

You might also want to find out where your local transmitter is - look at the aerials on people's roofs and go with the majority - and make sure her indoor aerial has a good line-of-sight to it. Ideally, you want nothing but glass between them. A door might not be too bad. Walls are definitely bad. If you need to use an aerial extension cable, make sure it's a good quality one. Cheap ones have very thin wire that is all but useless. Once you've positioned the aerial, the actual position of the cable - particularly if you've used an extension cable - can make a big difference.

Try pressing menu on the remote control.;)
  • yes try tuning it on a main aerial, then see what it can pick up with the indoor aerial.

Unless you live very close to a transmitter the indoor aerial is unlikely to work. Especially if it is not an amplified one.

How could the guy in the shop possibly know whether you would need an external aerial or not? He just told you that to get the sale.

    Indeed.
    He lied.

You could always take it back and complain.

I was quoted approx £120 to fit a new external aerial - that was about 8 years ago, so sorry can't help with current prices.

Probably a touch more than that, depending on where you live (South East / London will cost more).

If you already have a main aerial, depending on how it is fitted it migh be easier to buy a cheap splitter / amplifier for the loft - you can get these for around £20. Feed your existing aerial into this, and then run a feed to each room from there. Of course it all depends on your property etc.

Realistically, freeview needs a decent strong signal, and it is unlikely that an indoor set-top aerial would be suitable for most cases.
