Vodafone have a £5 per month add on that gives you calls to Canada for 5p per minute. See here
  • Mobile world PAYG sim from Carphone Warehouse costs 5p a minute to mobiles and landlines in Canada. My parents travel a lot so I have a separate phone with a mobile world sim in it to call when they're abroad.

Try Vyke, it is the simplest program that requires the least memory. I think it costs about 2pence per hour, a steal.

Pricewise I think Vyke is good, but unlike Skype you cannot use it for videocalling.

The US and Canada do not differentiate between mobiles and landlines (because called party pays for incoming calls), so cost to mobiles and landlines should be the same.

You could get a calling card.
If you live near any ethnic shops they sell them, you get about 500 mins to the US for about 5 pounds Canada should not be that much different.
Or, I have Virgin landline and have a special package on it that I can call the US for 3p a min anytime day or night, but watch out because if you call a UK number in the daytime it is silly money 35p a min, but a free hour at night or weekends.
