No, the there is def. only 2 positions marked. The valve is a DANFOSS type HSA3. It is installed on its side with the word DANFOSS upright not across. Looking straight at it as its installed, on the top is marked MAN on the left AUTO on the right with a sliding lever which is on AUTO. There are no other markings on it. On the Right hand side edge (not on the front) is a paper marker with an arrow for hot water one way and c/heating the other.
It doesn't matter. Its either the vaklve itself stuck or the actuator (the head). Remove the actuator from the valve. Check that the valve operates by hand and that it isn't very stiff - if it is replace it. If the valve is OK then turn the actuator over and look at the socket that the valve spindle fits into. Get someone to operate the controls downstairs. You should see movement as the actuator attempts to move the valve to the position corresponding to whether heat or hot water is required. If it doesn't then its the actuator - replace it.

Now that I am fairly certain that its to do with the valve, I will get back to the people who installed it all last April. I did ring him on Saturday and he said that it was probably the thermostat and he would pop in and put a new one on. I dont want him coming and putting a new thermostat on when its not that and I will have to get him back again.. Many thanks to all who have helped.

Before he comes back do the little test I suggest. Then you have some proof (its the valve or the actuator or neither) when he arrives.
