Just thought I'd type this while I'm setting here like a larry waiting for the plumber to turn up - he didn't bother yesterday or the day before, said he would today, but is already 2 hours late, so I doubt it. Muggins has been had again.
Tried checkatrade,which.co.uk,mybuilder,ratedpeople , all full of cowboys or nobody at all. I wouldn't bother with Which to those who are wondering - they only have a handful of people and they are a) on Google anyway and b) booked up. Most have 0 reviews anyway on the Which website. A year or so ago I had so many people enquiring through MyBuilder, now it's all gone quiet.
Guess I'll keep looking."The only man who makes money from a gold rush is the one selling the shovels..."0 -

Morning. I was reading this thread and driving myself up the wall. In the past I have used people to do work that were recommended and friends (ex). Nothing seemed to get the job done to the standard that was exceptable, IMO.
The last job I had done a few years ago was a bathroom rebuild. Completely stripped out. I wont do into the detail except to say that a friends husband did it. I spent a lot of money on it and it took forever to have it completed. Even today we have problems with it. Needless to say we are no longer friends with said plumber!
I am currently in need of a roofer so I went onto Rated People and MyBuilder dot and posted an advert. I got resopnses within minutes which impressed me.
Mybuilder seems to have more information about the builders and the reviews in most cases seem real. Or they did until I read this thread! :-)
Are views of these sites still the same?A shadowy flight into the dangerous world of a man who does not exist.

the helpless, the powerless, in a world of criminals who operate above the law.0 -
mybuilder.com is very poor. It is expensive and a poor service. The industry is suffering enough with taxes and high fuel costs without some internet entrepreneur trying to rake in 5% of a mans bread and butter. These websites should be boycotted.
I couldn't agree more My boyfriend got two references off customers who have used him since (happy customers). One reference was not accepted without explanation resulting in this message being posted on his page "This user has been permanently restricted from using MyBuilder" which now comes up in google above his own site! There is no way to dispute this or find out why one was not accepted. He wasn't warned this would happen if the references were turned down either. Very unfair and potentially damaging to his business.0 -
I Cannot Recommend this site. I used one of their builders who talked the talk. Highly persuasive so I gave him a positive review. ( which he nagged me to do ). A week later I reviewed his work. It was obvious it was not such a great deal as I originally thought. Problems with materials and faults quickly arising. I contacted My Builder requesting I updated my review with a more factual statement. They said is was impossible to change my review although they would delete it.
From my point of view the reviews expressed re. references are therefore not necessarily accurate reflections. I WILL NOT USE them agàin.0 -
I don't seem to have any different luck whether i use one of these sites, personal recommendation, or just phone round locally.
I have a 50/50 hit ratio of great to awful tradesman regardless of where they came from.
At least with these sites you don't need to leave 20 messages that nobody returns i guess....0 -
I find my work on my builder this is a good site for customers and keeps us tradesmen in check, although not sometimes a comfortable way to works,as you can not always keep the customer completely happy as there are bad customers as well as tradesmen, but we do not have any control of feedback, although we can reply but you do lose your 100% feedback record, but I would recomend this site.

I can't agree more with saveallmymoney. It's all just down to luck. I had tried all possible channels with mixed results. I also tried ratedpeople a few years ago, but just once because when I wanted to give my feedback (positive), I was astonished to find someone had already done it for me! I actually have good experience with mybuilder.com. Their website is brilliant, response is immediate, you can compare quotes so you get a rough idea how much the job's really worth, and don't necessarily have to hire the cheapest. When I needed a plumber I shortlisted one to have a look at the issue. I was ready to give him the job, but he didn't seem interested in finding out what caused the issue or offer any explanation or options, so I gave the job to another one who did and then turned out to be efficient and even cheaper. I didn't feel so powerless and at the tradesmen's mercy as I usually do. Pity sites as Which Trusted Trader feature so little feedback with listed companies, it makes you wonder why.0

As a Handyman I joined them about two weeks ago, to quote on jobs it seems I have to stump up a fee and even if you get shortlisted it doesn't mean you will get the job but still have to pay the fee. Not good, I have enough work to get on via word of mouth with so don't need leads that cost me everytime.0

I used mybuilder a couple of months ago to find a plumber to install a new douch/bidet shower in my bathroom.
I posted the job with photos and a good description. I quickly got 3 interested tradesmen, a couple of whom asked some further questions. When I shortlisted them I got phone calls quite quickly and arranged for 3 of them to come and have a look.
I made a decision based on the quote and what they said during the visit about how they would do the installation. The chap I chose had no feedback (he was just starting out on his own after working for a plumbing company) but did have a couple of testimonials. He came the next day and did a good job installing it. I gave him good feedback.
So it worked very well for me (this is Greater London/Kent).Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning0
