How to view files on another computer on network..

Just wondered if we are able to view files that are located on another computer on the network - ie from my laptop would I be able to open a file that is located on the desktop of our PC? We have a program for the farm on the desktop and you open the files on the desktop so wondered whether would be able to open them from the laptop?
Wasnt sure whether had asked something like this before but couldnt find it or remember the answer:D
As others have said, to view files you need to ensure that file sharing is enabled on the PC and laptop, both are on the same workgroup (start > control panel > system > Computer name tab > change). Once you are sure both laptop and PC are on the same network you need to have the folder or hard drive set up for sharing (right click the hard drive/ folder > sharing and security follow the instructions). Once you have done this you can then map the folder/drive as a drive on the laptop (right click my computer > map network drive > select the drive letter you want to use and then click browse to find the laptop (see image below)) or alternatively you can check the my network places to see if the PC shows up and click through that way.
For the program you would need the program installed on the laptop or have something like http://www.realvnc.com/Sometimes i surprise myself by being right.0 -

Real VNC will allow you to remotely access another PC, as if you were sitting infront of it.
This would be good if you need to access a program remotely, but can only run it on one computer for whatever reason.
Regarding the basics of setting up a network, if you follow the instructions above, it is quite easy. If you are struggling, a friendly 14 year old could do it for you if you gave him £5 - I don't mean to be flippant about this, but really, most do computing at school so should be able to assist.
Cheaper than getting an IT man in, so very 'money saving'
