Just wondered if we are able to view files that are located on another computer on the network - ie from my laptop would I be able to open a file that is located on the desktop of our PC? We have a program for the farm on the desktop and you open the files on the desktop so wondered whether would be able to open them from the laptop?
Wasnt sure whether had asked something like this before but couldnt find it or remember the answer:D

Yes. You need to enable File and Print Sharing on both machines.
You need to Share the Folder with the photos on (right click = properties)
You also need to ensure both machines are in the same workgroup
You may need password access onto both machines.
Different OS's are slightly different generally similar (XP, Vista, Win7)0 -
You will be able to 'see' the desktop files from your laptop, but no guarantee that the program you use for the farm will run.
Unless it runs in a browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox etc), you'd normally need to install it on the laptop, then point it at the files on the desktop. his may be possible if it asks where the files are during the install, but could just assume files will always be on the local computer. You need to check out the program and/or call the suppliers.
One possible bodge would be to install it on the laptop, then copy the files over using File Explorer whenever they've changed. Unless the program is designed for access from multiple computers, there's no safe way to allow updates from either computer though.0 -
How did I assume the OP wanted to see photo's?? weird!0

thanks for the replies, having tried various ways I dont think there is a simple way of getting the files across (can email them etc but thought if there was a way of sharing files it would be simple), thanks for the replies anyway thoughWeight Loss - 102lb0

- File sharing needs to be turned on on the other computer
- On your PC in the address bar type \\NameOfTheOtherComputer
- If you can't access it, the other computer has a firewall turned on, so disable it
For more info, Google it.0 -
