changing a battery?

Comments

  • well the RAC man came out and fitted a new battery, but it seems the alternator is going now as the battery light is staying on intermittantly:rolleyes: and the radio has gone dead as there was no code to be found anywhere

I'm not too fussed but how much is an alternator going to cost me? and are there any luvvies in the hampshire area who can either recommend a garage to me or do it for me......

    thanks x

If I was the RAC man I would have started the car with the old battery in situ, and then checked the alternator. If it won't start you already know that something is wrong, possibly ignition. If it starts but stops as soon as you release the donor power supply, then its alternator. If it starts and continues to run when removal of donor supply, then you can check the alternator is functioning correctly irrespective of a duff battery. AFAICS

If the alternator was bad, then there's no need to change the battery

Alternators vary depending on model, can be as cheap as £30 or as much as £250 or anywhere in between.

Put your make/model into ebay add the word alternator to start to get an idea of how much it will cost.
  • thanks Wig He did a voltage test on the original battery and it was knackered, going to ring round some garages in a bit x

Well there's a shock. Did you ask him how much commission he got for selling you a battery, and now you need more work doing. Cynical, moi, never

Doing an alternator is fairly straightforward if you have the tools. But I'm nowhere near you, sorry :(
