It's very difficult to make a reasonably fitting 'custom' guard over a fixed brace. I couldn't do it for my own kid!!!!
If you try it yourself with impression material from a mail order place, you'll either pull the brace off as it sets around it, or end up very embarassed in the dentist surgery while he chipps it of (Murmuring about hucking ridiots under his breath)
Ask the orthodontist about what he recommends. They often have some 'off the peg' ones that are quite reasonable.
Really though, full contact rugby and braces aren't a good mix, and it would be best if he could avoid it altogether!
Very interesting points here. Unfortunately the head of games at my son's very traditional boys school (it's a state school) does not quite see things the same way as you, hence my quest for the best option on a mouthguard. Our orthodontist simply said that he must use a gumshield for sports (she felt he ought to wear one for all types of sports actually). His next appointment is 11th Jan, so maybe he could make do with an ill-fitting off the shelf one until I can speak to her in more detail about it then.
Opro claim to offer a 'putty-free' system for moulding teeth with fixed braces. I'm not sure what that is, but as it is designed specifically for use with braces I would assume (with the caveat that I am not a dentist!) that it would be compatible.0 -
My dentist is in the process of ordering one for me - it's about £30.0

if u contact o pro they may be able to tell you where they are doing a fitting ( at another school or rugby club) and then you can go along and get it moulded there. we have had other people come to the club when we are doign itsaving for more holidays0

My son just got his for free from our dentist
Specially moulded we had to go and pick it up a week later!

Either very generous dentist and working for free or claiming it on the NHS as something other than a sports mouthguard and breaking their contract.
Like 12 UDA for an occlusal appliance = c£250.
Would be interesting to know! How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -
claiming 12 uda's would constitute fraud, according to the nhs because mouthguards were specifically excluded from band 3. Those dentists claiming band 3 should be hauled in front of the GDC for misclaiming tax payers money - shame on them, there is precious little funding for the nhs. if you play sports who buy the rest of your sports gear, why not your mouthguard.:(0

constitutes fraud according to dpb and pct0

Erm, If you don't mind!
Aside from hauling up a year old thread. I would pay for one if it was requested of me. It hasn't been. The only thing I've done is go to the dentist to get a properly fitting mouthguard for my child.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.
