Destroying an iPhone can take a lot of effort.
Lol, saw the PC World 'test' when the first Gen of iPhone came out... seemed to cope pretty well...

My mates - 2 of them completely smashed the screen through normal bumps and knocks, and on one of my other mate's, about 20-30 pixels were dead after leaving it in his pocket and falling over...?? Prob not the best phone to have if some 4-month old is going to have it in their mouth half the time ;)

Marty is right, the iPhone will still play music whilst not in flight mode however if you get lots of texts and calls the interference from the phone will give you that lovely beeping noise from the speakers. Take your existing phone and lay it near your HiFi you'll see what I mean.
Roberts or Pure did bring out a little HiFi unit that says it is immune to the iPhone interference but it wasn't that great sound wise.
I still would go with the Touch and seperate phone.
    £149.99 8GB iPod Touch + 18months average contract of £20 = £510

    or

    iPhone 18month contract £30 per month + £185 = £725

Thats taking O2s cheapest and shortest iPhone tarrif which as a bundle sucks. You get the jist of the comparison though.

    Or:

    iPhone 3GS 16GB - £440.40 on Pay and Go

Which includes 12 months of free unlimited web access.

How much extra will you spend a month on topups though?
Say £15 for calls and texts thats another £180 quid.

Sorry maybe i keep listing my own arguments to stop me from upgrading my touch to an iPhone ;)
I just can't justify the extra costs and would hate to break my music player and phone in one if I had an accident with it.

It all depends on how you use your phone. I don't call people very often, or send texts, so a pre-paid iPhone would be ideal for me. However, they aren't available in the US. :(

    That's an important consideration.

My phone is due for an upgrade and i see i can get an iphone, we were going to buy an ipod nano, with speaker dock thingy and a digital camera for xmas....should we just get the iphone? can you still plug that into those speaker docks?

I use my iphone with my GF's speaker dock, though the phone brings up a little message saying that its not intended to be used with this product it all works fine, it just doesn't charge the iphone same thing happens with ipod kit that came with my car but they all play music just fine, it certainly does not stop you from recieving texts and calls.

We use the touch for listening to music, with a docking station, see here. It gives a surprisingly great sound.

Probably best as others have said to keep to a separate phone, and spend any extra on the dock.

Wonderful gadget the iphone. A parent's child got a hold of hers put a passcode on it somehow. Locked her out completely.
To fix the problem you have to do a factory settings reset. Not that you'll find out how to do that on the Apple website.

You need to plug it into a computer in "iphone recovery mode" and let itunes download the iphone operating system.

4 times I tried it last night and 4 times it crashed.
Apple's one and only way of fixing the problem.
I think it was packed up and sent back to Apple today.

I'll not be rushing to buy one.

That could happen to any phone. With the sim lock or phone locks.

As far as the iPhone and music I did say to prevent interference it should be in flight mode, which stops calls and texts. But since you mentioned it what use is a phone with a flat battery because you've been listening to music when it's not charging :)
