You can plug an iPhone into a dock.

As I understand it an iPod Touch is pretty much an iPhone without the phone bit.

I wouldn't rely on the iPhone as a camera though. The 3GS version has a better camera but most digital cameras will be far better.

For an iPhone to work in a speaker dock properly you need to activate flight mode on it, this means that you won't recieve any texts or calls in that mode. Mobile phones send out interference when they are close to speakers, everyone will probably heard it at one point or nother.
I have a touch and it is great. If you have wifi in the house it will do exactly the same as an iPhone around the house except calls and texts.
Not to mention you can get far better mobile phone deals when you go to something other than an iPhone.

Agree with oneday, the iphone does have limitations when you want to use it with a docking station.Get an itouch for the music etc and a decent phone instead.Works out cheaper as well if you shop around

Thnaks for clarifying that. i knew it could be docked but didn't realise it effectively stopped it being a phone.

Docking an iPhone isn't a problem unless you get a text message every 5 minutes 24/7.

As for what to buy, it depends on what you're after. If you just want a phone to make phone calls with, I'd suggest getting an iPod Touch and shopping around for a good deal on a phone.

If you think you'll be using your phone for emailing, mobile internet and running apps, just buy the iPhone.

I don't think there's any mobile phone that's an adequate replacement for a dedicated digital camera, though you may be happy with the results, and an iPhone certainly takes better photos than a camera that's at home in a drawer.

Thanks for all the replies, so glad i haven't ordered the iphone, having to put it in flight mode to use the docking station would be really annoying as i do get quite alot of texts/calls a day would hate to miss an important call because i was listening to music.

My mobile is just used for calls/texting and taking quick photos/videos of the baby/kids when they do something funny/amazing throughout the day that i can show/send to daddy and grandparents.

We do have a digital camera for days out/birthdays etc, photos we would actually get printed. And we have a laptop for the internet. Seeing as i'm just a stay at home mum, the iphone is more suited to someone out on the road all day and not me. An ipod shuffle is probably fine for me, just wanted to be able to download tunes from itune, but i think i can only listen to music through headphones, which brings me back to the ipod nano or the touch......

You do not need to put it in flight mode when listening to music.

Well, then an iPhone might not be for you. Though, the iPhone does make it very easy to email (and even edit) photos and edit and upload videos to YouTube for sharing.

    A Nano has three advantages:

    1. It has a (decent, but not great) video camera
    2. It has an FM radio
    3. It is a lot smaller

If you just have to have one of the above features, get a Nano. If not, get the Touch (which is a wonderful device).

Then, once you've had the Touch for awhile, you'll want to get an iPhone. ;)

Probably best to not get an iPhone in your situation. By all means, get an iPod to dock and listen to music, but you could get another phone dedicated to the phone function and pics/videos of your young ones... The reason I say this is because not only is the iPhone upwards of £550 to buy outright, but I know of at least 3 people who have damaged/cracked that supposedly 'lovely' screen.

Not knowing a lot about your circumstances, the C902 from Sony Ericsson has an outstanding digital camera for it's price (know from personal experience and various reviews) at a much more moderate price of around £160 (will be cheaper dependant on which mobile 'network' you are on).

Destroying an iPhone can take a lot of effort.
