Council tax - avoiding- illegal?

LOL @ all the do-gooders on this thread. :rotfl:
To the chick that's asking, all you need to do is keep your contact address at your folks house and have your wages and bank statements going there, plus be on the ER there and you won't have to worry about any council tax as you won't exist at your bloke's place.
Don't listen to this lot with their "you'll end up jail" type replies as they want you to scare-monger you because they can't find a way to avoid it themselves.
Seriously, I know more people that don't pay CT than you could shake a stick at and nothing has ever happened to any of them. Well, actually there was one time when 6 people were listed on the ER at a place and no CT had been paid on the property for same amount of years :rotfl: and the council eventually stationed a car with a couple of investigators outside their place for a few weeks to find out !!!!!! was going on, but nothing else came of that except a snotty court letter addressed to one of the names there which promptly went in the bin and life carried on as normal.
Yes it's all very illegal and everything but the fact is that you get f-all in return for paying them £700+ per year and it's just another stealth tax. If you can find a way of not paying it then good on you I say. If I didn't have properties in my name then I'd be doing it myself.
Go girl. :T

The more people that actually pay their allotted share, the cheaper it will be for the rest of us.If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0 -

I queried this a few years ago with my local council. I had recently graduated and was staying at my then partner's flat quite often, he claimed the 25% single person discount and I didn't want him to get in trouble for anything.
I was advised that as long as my primary residence was with my parents and I was registered there (ie, they were paying council tax as though I lived there) and I spent most of my time there - ie, 4 nights a week with them and no more than 3 nights a week at boyfriend's - it was ok for him to claim the single person discount.
I would assume the full exemption would apply to the same circumstances, as your OH is still a student.
The key part is where you are actually going to be living? If your home is going to be with him then you need to pay the relevent amount of council tax, if you're just staying over a few nights a week then it's different.0 -
What degree did you get?
What type of work are you doing, OP?"It's official, MSE's harbouring total fruitcakes">^..^<0 -

It says something about you when you think that simply being honest and thinking that other should at least try to be honest too makes someone a "do-gooder". Yeah I know, you don't care. Still doesn't change things though. If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything0 -

At various times I have claimed single person exemption, student exemption and looks like I will soon be claiming council tax benefits - all legitimately, so suggesting we are all 'jealous' is a nonsense.
Also nonsense is the claim that we get nothing in return for council tax - you don't get your bins and recycling collected from your doorstep? No schools in your area, police presence or fire service? No council sports facilities? None of your friends or family live in a council house or claim housing benefit? Never seen a road being repaired or pavement swept? :rolleyes:Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -
In my personal experiences both as a landlord and a student, there are variable discounts on offer when one of the residents is a student and there is only one other person living there - or maybe that any additional people are under 18, I don't know. Those are the general guidelines you're quoting - the ones I'm referring to (too lazy to find links and too new to post them anyway) are the ones which refer to 2 occupany households where one person is a student in higher education. For example, in my past experiences, I had different council tax % exemptions in Manchester compared to Nottingham.
For clarification:
The 25% discount is set in law and cannot be changed at a local level - if there is 1 disregarded person (e.g student, under 18, apprentice etc) and the remaining occupier is not disregarded then the 25% discount applies.
The unoccupied and unfurnished rate for a property after a Class C exemption ends and the second home discounts (in most cases) can be set locally under delegated powers granted from 01 April 2004. The unoccupied and unfurnished rate can vary between 50% and 0% and the second home discounts between 50% and 10%.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -

:rotfl: You are deluded if you seriously believe that.

My schooling was paid for privately so why should I subsidise those no-hopers that go to public schools?
"No-hopers" go to public/private schools too so I'm glad that your parents were able to pay for your education.Ever called the fire service? You have to pay for it afterwards if they come out. Same with ambulance service if you call them out in an emergency.
You only get recharged if the issues aren't emergencies.
I can't tell from your post if there are many groups/sectors you don't take issue with. Must be awful to feel so bitter. I can really see why you wouldn't advocate paying council tax.
OP unless you've had as dreadful a time as Snooze, pay your council tax if you're liable to do so.Opinion, advice and information are different things. Don't be surprised if you receive all 3 in response.0
