Virgin Media Broadband connection 'drops out' constantly

Hi, has anyone else been experiencing issues with Virgin Media broadband recently? My connection "drops out" and reconnects every few minutes - it's very frustrating if you want to try to download anything or watch replay tv. I am also getting speeds of around 1 or 2mb but I am on a 10mb plan. I get the same issues when my ipod touch is connected, so I am pretty sure it's not my an issue with my laptop.
I phoned them and was fobbed off with the excuse that this is down to heavy use internet in my area in the evenings - very irritating given that I work all day so the only time I have to access the internet is during the evenings.
Has anyone else had this problem and how was it resolved? Thanks!

You need to give more info about how you are connecting. Wireless or ethernet? Cable modem or modem/router? Make/model?
If wireless, try a temporary connection by ethernet. If this cures the problem then you know it is just a wireless issue.
I'm assuming you are on a VM cable service, not Virgin National ADSL service (since you mention the standard cable 10GB service). No free lunch, and no free laptop
