It seems strange at first, but it's actually a deliberate part of the design. By "composite key" it means the combination of passphrase and key file.

The wording is deliberately ambiguous so that it does not give an attacker useful information about which part - passphrase or key file (or both) - was incorrect, as that would make an attack easier.

Yes, I understand exactly what it means. But it's still a very poor choice of wording, which I suspect a non-techie may find confusing.

I have never had a problem with this...maybe the above will help troubleshoot.
