    But its me that has VLC player, not my dad. He wants to play the files in windows media player.... Would it still be changing the file extension to .mpg?

    his pc may not have the correct codecs to read the files if they are obscure.
    when you copy from camcorder, its best to copy as avi as its raw, uncompressed video which is recognised by all and sundry.
    Target Savings by end 2009: 20,000
    current savings: 20,500 (target hit yippee!)
    Debts: 8000 (student loan so doesnt count)

    new target savings by Feb 2010: 30,000

    VideoLan VLC doesn't require codecs. If he wants to use Windows Media Player, download the codec pack I linked to. If your father hasn't got broadband take copies of one or both with you, then run at least one of them on his PC. I would say that it's potentially less confusing if you only use one of them.
