help needed regarding video clip

Hi, I have transferred 3 video clips from my camcorder.
It is opening by VCL media player. I changed it so that it opens by windows media player.
I then transferred the clips onto cd and gave it to my dad (whom the clippings were for).

Now, he cant open the files at all.... anyone know why?

When i transferred the clips onto pc from camcorder, there were the 3 movie clips and 3 .modd files. Would i maybe have to transfer the .modd files onto cd aswell??

Or is it maybe because of the VCL media player?

Im so confused.

Which application is your father opening the files in? Media Player? VCL? What extension were the files saved as? .wmv or mpeg? As far as I know, Media Player should play mpeg files.

Would I be correct in thinking that the camcorder is a Sony? And what are the filename extensions of the movie clips? .mpg or .m2ts?

Ah, I forgot that by default Windows hides the filename extension of files it recognises. Right-click on one of the video files and should see its file type. Also, do you know the model number of the camcorder? I presume it's an HD one.

I right-clicked but i see the options of play, send to, copy, properties etc etc...even when i click on properties, it doesnt give the file extension.

The sony camcorder i have is DCR-SR35

Sorry, I forgot to mention the properties bit. I wonder if the filename's extensions have somehow been removed? You could try renaming one of them so that it ends with .mpg.

Try loading it with VideoLan VLC, Media Player Classic, Windows Media Player, or even just click it.

Hopefully renaming the files on his PC will fix it. Is he using Windows XP? If so, is he able to watch other videos because I don't think XP comes installed with support for mpg files, but VideoLan VLC can play them without you having to install 'codecs' ( programmes that convert files into video and audio ).

As long as the files end in .mpg, your father should be able to play them with VideoLan VLC. Hopefully...

If your father wants to be able to play them on a Windows XP PC, you may need to install a codec pack. You have to be careful with them as they can be a source of viruses. The K-Lite Codec Mega Pack is probably the best one. I've used it for many years. You just have to be careful where you get them from. BetaNews is reliable.
