Comet Stealing my money!

I have just tried to buy a TV from Comet online and had unfortunatly put in the wrong password to Visa Verified. This, quite rightly, resulted in the transaction of the money being denied. After this, i received an email from comet saying this had been refused by the bank and I should call up and re-order. I did this and the guy from Comet said I must call my bank (Barclays) to allow the next payment to them to be authorised. So i did. I later received a call from barclays Fraud team saying that 4 payments attmepts had been denied to the amount of the TV (£700), plus one random payment of £273.78 had been taken out by Comet!
I called Comet and they said they cannot find where, who, why or when this £273.78 was taken out, and I called Barlcays to ask if they could stop the payment, but it was in the magic 'holding zone', so it couldnt be returned unless it goes 'all the way' out of my account. It would remain hovering, this reducing my available funds for my account!!
Comet then said they need a statement to prove the payment exsists, which i cannot get until the payment comes out of my account(!!). I of course, dont want this payment to come out of my account...i just dont want them to take it!
Has anyone had anything like this happen to them before, or know what rights I have in this situation. I am of the opinion that Comet have in fact stolen £273.78 from me without authorisation. Can i, and should i, take this any further than just getting the £273.78 back?

If someone steals something and then gives it back, it doesn't mean they are now guiltless!
So if you feel so strongly you ought to report this theft to the people who deal with thieves in your neck of the woods!0 -

Would the Police really be able to do anything in terms of compensation? Is there a retail authority that may be able to give advice on such things?0 -
The courts often award compensation to be paid by convicted criminals to their victims.0
