I know for outright performance and perks it's not the best but Talk Talk is very well priced. It is about £17.50 a month including line rental and a wireless router. It would be perfect for your use.

The worrying thing about the Ox and a Ferrari, which has the worst enviromental(emissions) impact ;):p

O2 Standard via Quidco would be cheaper(and probably better) if available. http://www.quidco.com/o2-home-broadband/
  • Thank you once again for your replies.

To clarify, I am on the replacement scheme for low-user from BT. It works out around £11 a quarter against about £50 a quarter I had originally been paying for the standard package. I don't use the telephone for voice calls so can't see the point in paying an extra £150 ish a year. My ISP costs around £10 a month when I do pay for it and it uses a freephone number so BT shouldn't have any grounds to backcharge me.

I have had broadband before (in a previous house), however, I manage away with dial-up at the moment. I will try a USB modem and will look into the BT package small print to see if this new scheme allows broadband access.

The modem is probably the best route at the moment, it is not so important to have both computers online at the same time but it would have been a nice option.

    Many thanks

mrsfrench, if you are on BT Basic (what you call the replacement low-user scheme), then yes you can have broadband on this service.
You can quite possibly get broadband for less than the £10 a month you are paying for dial up, depending on what exchange you are on. Have a look on https://www.samknows.com, then exchange search.
For a relatively low user, Plusnet is a good option at £5.99 (if you are on a Market 3 exchange, if not £11.99). Or O2 starting at £7.34 (if you are on an LLU exchange).
If you need more advice post the name of yoiur exchange or the first half of your postcode, and further help can be given.
