  • Thank you all very much for your advice. To explain - I am still on dial-up as, if I take BB I then lose my 'low-user' rental with BT. Also, due to a glitch I haven't actually paid for dial up since about January this year

Some nights it is like wading through treacle and the desktop is on its' last legs, however, it is enough for me at the moment. My sister has a router somewhere - I shall try and acquire it at the weekend and see if that works. I shall keep you posted if I am successful.

    Many thanks once again.

Are you on good terms with your neighbours?
With you being such a light user you could ask to piggy back their connection wirelessly. Just give them a little something each month like a chocolate cake :) or a fiver.
At least if you ask they can't catch you out if you don't.

Also Dave I hope your not replying whilst on the Loo

A router won't work on dial up. If you are intent on continuing on dial up then you need a USB modem.
How much are you paying for dial up (when you do pay)? You may well find bb is cheaper.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • mrsf, you do know there is a BT rep on MSE? <Homer>doh!

I thought everyone was being moved off the BT 'Light User' scheme onto BT Basic? BT Light User is no longer available to new subscriptions. Assuming the OP qualifies for BT Basic, broadband is allowed on this service.

what I don't understand is why anyone would spend money on a new fast laptop but refuse to get BB incase they give up the £4 odd discount from BT they get by sitting around for hours on end waiting on a dial up connection

    ....the mind boggles

and BT will probably backcharge for the dial-up when they realise.

Windows 7 on dial up is a bit like hitching an ox-cart to the back of a Ferrari...

    Hi Mrs french
I believe macman is correct that everyone is being moved off Lightuser. I know my mom has been. (She doesn't have BB at all)
I really think you should have a look around at what broadband deals are available. how much line rental do you actually pay to BT; some deals from providers include BB for not much more money.
Do you have a mobile contract? some mobile providers offer deals on bb too
If you've bought yourself a nice new laptop then i would suggest getting wireless broadband; you'll never look back and wonder how you ever did without it

USB Dial up modem is what you need for the laptop, but you will only be able to use one machine at a time on the Internet.

I do have a wireless dial up USB modem somewhere, but that will still limit you to one connection,,,,albeit wirelessly. :)

Too bad that you didn't mention any of this during your search for a laptop. I would have steered you towards a Toshiba with a 56k modem(which is what you need).
