Hi, Yeah thats the shape. What's it called?

I asked Samuels about the weight and they didn't have a clue.
  • 41j0KVs3VeL._SL500_AA280_.jpgMiles, I haven't got a clue what the shape is called. Posted the picture up, in case someone else knows.

H Samuel should have scales to weigh the gold. Most jewellers I have been to have scales, especially the ones that buy gold. Not sure if H Samuel buys gold.
We could all learn a little something from the weather. It pays no attention to criticism.

Hi, thought I could maybe help
some people-my other half is a goldsmith specialising in handmade rings and done a lengthy apprenticeship to get to the prestige he's at now so knows a fair bit lol!! I used to work as a manager for leslie davies (which is the same as ernest jones and the company owns h.Samuel) personally if I were u I wouldn't buy from h.samuels the quality is low. To be classed as 9 ct gold the make up of the metal just has to have 37.5% pure gold in it-the rest is just alloys so it's a low level of pure gold anyway but h.Samuel (and most chain stores) buy from the far east and the alloys are poor therefore the quality of ring is low. 18ct is 75% gold so is purer but ur more independant jewller or small chain will have a better quality! The bigger the chain store the bigger bulk they buy i. This compromises quality massively! The diamonds etc from places like that are generally poor grade also the workmanship in the jewellery is zero. stones fall out, metal is pourous etc! Please don't anyone be offended!! If I were u I would go visit the Birmingham jewellery quarter or Hatton Garden London and get a better idea of how the ring feels in weight (jewellers can name anything lightweight, medium, heavy etc there's no set weight) so u have to weigh them up physically!! Hattin garden would be a good start for the londoners, but ALWAYS haggle-we can drop the prices hugely. In ernest jones the mark up us like 70%!!! (obviously u won't get that off btw but deffo at least 10% more if ur spending a fair whack!!) oh and buy the way that ring shape is just called a bevelled edge-decent jewellers should know what that is! Hth Kate x
  • Hi Kate, thanks for your useful reply. I think we will go to Hatton Garden for rings. My OH got my engagement ring made but the jeweller has now gone to Australia. Its white gold 18ct with a lovely solitaire diamond half carat I think. The white gold does mark easily - would Pallidium be compatible with white gold and harder wearing ? Many thanks jj:confused:
We got married 17th April 2010 !! A wonderful day with my wonderful husband !! :T

Hiya, glad I could help someone! Hatton garden is def the place to go although make sure u don't go into the dodgy pawn type if shops and also shop around, ask everyone their best price and don't buy till you've been to lots of shops to compare! Also some shops are unscrupulous and will tell u anything to make u buy. So I'll tell u now palladium won't go with White gold as the palladium is harder and will wear down the gold over time. Unfortunately u canonly have gold in 18ct same as your engagement ring! Which means that they will alwaysneed rhodium plating in the future to restore their looks. But if u have to put ur engagement ring in every year then u can just put the wed ring in with it so no hardship there! Unless ur engagement ring is a funny shape u won't need them to handmake anything you should just be able to buy one that suits ur eng ring. Hope that helps. Go into the shops confident as places like that can be intimidating for some reason!! Hth Kate x

    Hi Kate
Thanks for all of your useful advice. We had been considering using Tesco clubcard vouchers at Goldsmiths - we did this before with my engagement ring but the prices of a simple 18ct gold wedding band is anything around £500. I assume that as my engagement ring is 18ct yellow gold I will need to choose the same for the wedding ring then? What would be the usual price for this do you think?

Hiya it depends on what type of 18ct gold ring you have-if it's a court cut band and how heavy it is! I would imagine 18ct would go for anywhere between £300 upwards depending the shape and weight (I've been off on maternity leave for the last 7 months so this is an educated guess!!) Goldsmiths is a pretty reputable company, the mark up is quite high but then again it is for most high street jewellery chains. If u are getting lots off from clubcard vouchers then it should be worth it but I would check the price in somewhere like hatton garden or Birmingham jewellery quarter if u can to see if the difference and whether using vouchers is good! But yes u will have to have the same metal as your engagement ring as the wearing of the two metals will be the same! X

Thanks for all the advice Kate. Can you explain how they get to 9ct and 18ct as I know it goes off the weight with diamonds. I bought a ring that was 18ct but then head to be greatly resized so it wouldn't have weighed the same? There's no great importance just something I was pondering on the other day

    Try Betts Metal Sales.

Have a look at their website and then register as a HOBBYIST - that will get you 50% discount. If you aren't registered and logged in, their prices are DOUBLE what you will pay.

We got our wedding rings from them and were very pleased with the quality and value.

Ours are 18 carat white gold and two rings weighing a total of 23g between them cost £450 last year.

High street price would have been over £1000.

They make them, so you aren't going to beat their prices.

Get your ring size at a high street jeweller and then order from Betts.

Their prices change daily (as they are based on the gold price) and your final ring price is based on the actual weight of your ring.
