Plain gold wedding rings - quality and price...

Getting married next year and we're gradually working through the list.
Looked at some rings, the sort of thing we're after in H Samuel the other day, and the following seemed to fit the bill.
http://www.hsamuel.co.uk/webstore/detail/R/3672085/ - court fit extra heavy 3mm - £179
http://www.hsamuel.co.uk/webstore/detail/R/3672360/ - court fit extra heavy 5mm - £275
Now Samuels isnt the most classy jeweller on the high street, but is the product going to be the same everywhere, with just the price changing? Or will it be better made, better grade of gold, more gold, brighter display lights..?
With the prices above, is it worth looking into mail order?
This for example is about the same money, but without the security of the high street.

When we looked at rings last month the honest sales lady in H-samuel said to come back nearer the time as if you are getting married in the summer your finger size may change as the warm weather comes. We are after plain gold too and I always thought 9ct was the same everywhere.0

I'd have thought 9ct gold in H Samuels was the same as 9ct gold anywhere to behonest, but I don't actually know! My engagement ring is from there though and its just as pretty and twinkly as any other ring you might come across!0

Thanks for the replies. Any more thoughts would be very welcome.
Is there any chance of January sale in Samuels?0 -
I got our from Elma Jewellery on Ebay. Really good quality and really cheap OH's was £40. Just had his resize and the jeweller was impressed with it. Not sure if they do yellow gold as we were looking for white gold, but still really good value. I paid that kind of price for our rings - they were 18ct heavy wt gold - elma jewellery - they were excellent - very fast and came in a nice box - well worth a look - we saved £200 on high street pricesHad a thrifty wedding 17-06-10

Hi I think you will pay higher prices in the high street. I bought our (palladium) wedding rings on-line and have been pleasantly surprised. I used ebay seller j.mellodew_jeweller for OHs and we had to send it back to get it re-sized- this was free except postage. They have similar gold rings cheaper. For info I used J&K Harris online (not ebay) who also offer a free re-sizing service but wasn't needed-for mine although prices seem similar to your post. Definately shop around. xx0

We looked at plain bands in H Samuel and their 'heavyweight' isn't heavy at all.
Not compared to other places.
Infact my uncle needed a new band and just picked one up in Argos (he bent his at work so didn't want to pay out lots incase same thing happened) and that is twice the weight of the one my OH was looking at in H Sams.
We eventually got OH's in Beaverbrooks.
Mine is from Ernest Jones (mine was heavier than the same plain one in beaverbrooks though ~ strange!)
Shop around, feel and try on, that's my adviceTank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -
We bought our rings from the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham. Plain 18ct gold bands. OH was 8.1g and mine 5.1g total price £528. Went to Goldsmiths about 2 miles away in the Bullring exactly the same rings £1110 !!!!!!!0

We've looked into this a bit more now and tried a few more on.
I'm just after a fairly standard weight 5mm court band which is easy.
My W2B likes a profile that is square, but just has just had the very outer edge taken off at a 45 degree angle, in 3mm. Any idea what this profile is called, and where it can be bought online? Not that I think she'll let me buy it online, but I can try!0 -
Amazon
Miles, is this the shape? If not, have a look through the Amazon site for ideas and cost. Amazon normally give you the gold weight in grams. You can always ask H Samuel to weigh the ring that you are interested in, giving you the chance to compare like for like.PS I can't speak for other on-line jewellery sites, but I trust Amazon 99.99% (I don't trust anyone 100%
).
We could all learn a little something from the weather. It pays no attention to criticism.0
