All the money has gone from my bank account

I checked my balance on the internet and all of the money and overdraft has been transferred. It is showing as a payment in to an account in my name, but I dont have another account .

The man I spoke to said it had either been done on the internet or over the phone. They upped my od limit to cover the payments that haven't gone out of the account yet and to give me some money, I dont have anything going in until Friday, £5 in cash and a 5 year old and a 6 month old baby that need things.

The bank are looking in to it, and I will hear from them within five days apparently but what could have happened? and will I get it back?

Luckily I dont get paid until later in the month but Im on maternity leave I cant afford this.

Thanks.

In a case where your Bank account has been directly compromised - increasing your overdraft isn't necessarily a helpful thing? As someone has allegedly helped themselves to both cash + overdraft ...... an impartial fraudster will often have a 2nd go within the next day or so.

I would contact the Bank tomorrow and see if you can make alternative arrangements - or restrict it to cash drawings?

I take it you haven't reponded to any Emails from your Bank recently?

You must be in a right state, what a terrible thing to happen.

Can you physically go to a branch of your bank tomorrow, I find things tend to get sorted out better face to face in situations like this.

Best of luck, keep us posted.

Im going to go in to the bank first thing. I havent responded to any emails I have no idea how anyone could have got my details.

I didnt think about it happening again and the man I spoke too didnt seem too sure of what to do himself, but he did speak to his superviser.

You need to ensure it's been escalated to their Fraud people. If it's a very recent transaction - they'll be able to alert the receiving Bank.

It should make it much easier. But do ensure - tomorrow - that they've escalated it to Fraud.
Sounds as though someone has set up an account in your name / different address elsewhere. Relatively easy to do - but it doesn't explain the direct compromising of your normal account.

But do concentrate on the options to stop further (hopefully temporary) losses. It depends on how access was achieved to your account ..... but you need to face the fact that it may need to be closed with consequent work on rerouting DDs / salary etc. Sorry - it's not nice.

Has anyone considered RoSo yet? If they think you have an account (in arrears) within the organisation then it will show as a cash withdrawal with your name as a reference. They may have paid another account within the organisation that they believe is yours (or could well be, i.e. HSBC = M&S Card or RBS = Natwest)....

RoSo = Right of Set off

Good point NID, it doesn't sound like fraud to me, but I could be wrong.

I looked at that link, so if you owe money to the same company they can take money out of your current account? would the man on the phone not have known it was that when I spoke to him?

I dont have a credit card, a loan or a mortgage the only dept I have is to the next directory

I will talk to the bank this morning and see what they say

I went in to to the bank, and I also spoke to the fraud people. It looks as if it was done over the phone, I have phone banking set up but I never use it so they canceled that. A letter was sent from the phone banking department yesterday, but they couldn't access it to see what it said so I will have to wait for that to arrive.

I have to ring back in a couple of days to see what the investigation has found, if anything, but the man said the money should be back in my account within a week, which is good.

I have been advised to go through my statements and contact them again if I see anything I dont recognise, but I dont think I will as I check it regularly anyway. I have also set up their identity protection thing so I will get regular credit checks and alerted if anything changes on that. A few days ago I applied for a mobile, and was turned down which I thought was odd but I haven't had a chance yet to ring them and see why.

Its worrying how much information is needed for someone to do this, and I have no idea how they managed it.
