Hi bayo5743 - From your posts I gather that you gave a meter reading from the correct meter when you moved in, in March 09, and this meter was changed to a prepay in Sept 09

When a meter is changed, the required practice is to leave the consumer a card showing the readings of the old meter, and that same information is passed on to the supplier - So if BG and their agents had adhered to the rules, BG should have ready access to the Start & End readings of the original meter, which they seem to have lost
I don't think it resonable that your billing is adjusted on BG's Guess-Estimate of your consumption for the period March 09 - Sept 09, and the only figure that can come close will be your consumption for the same period in 2010, which is re-adjusted for long periods when you know you were away from home.

Write to BG heading the letter Complaint, pointing out that they had ignored your repeated requests to investigate an obvious problem, and that you will only accept billing adjustments based on your actual consumption in the period Mar 2010 - Sept 2010

The problem also existed under Scot. Powers regime, but I don't think there is chance of thier billing being re-assessed
    All the best

    Hi dogshome.

Thanks for your help. Your advice seems sound and I'll follow it.

Yes, obviously with hindsight, the reading I gave them in March 09 was from a meter not supplying my flat and therefore incorrect. However at the time it was the meter registered on the National Database for my flat. And it was on their insistence and after me repeatedly voicing my concerns and being ignored.

If you knew, or believed, the meter reading given was from a meter not supplying your property, why didn't you take the reading from the meter that was supplying your property?

Do you have evidence (e.g. a copy of a recorded letter) that you contacted the supplier back in March 2009 stating that the meter they believed was connected to your property wasn't in fact yours?

He thought that it was the correct meter. He only realised it was the incorrect meter when the power company pulled the supply to what they thought was the meter for another flat.

I'm not sure I understand your point sir!

I'm not an electrician and had no idea how to investigate all this or even if my suspicions were justified. I contacted both Scottish power and British Gas and accepted their reassurances especially as the meter I took readings from was registered on The National Database.

British Gas are not disputing any part of my account of how this all unfolded. They have apologised profusely and take full responsibility along with any other suppliers involved. They have records of all my enquiries and accept that I complained and requested an engineers visit twice as I've recounted in my earlier posts.

The only worry I have is do I legally have to accept the estimate they're preparing?

But that is not what the OP said.

    Hence my questions.

    Mr Premier:
Like most normal people I accepted authority. If I'd known for certain my fears were right or how to go about proving it, I wouldn't have paid the exorbitantly high bills. Surely that's self evident?
