I read this on the BBC website, where the headline is :
UNEMPLOYMENT FALLS TO 2.46 MILLION
Clicked through to the scottish BBC site where the headline is :-
JOBLESS TOTAL RISES PAST 200,000..
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/default.stm
So there certainly are regional differences, and perceptions etc
I also found this the most interesting part of the reportBut the fall in unemployment was fuelled partly by an increase in people taking part-time work.
The number of people in part-time employment increased by 99,000 over the quarter to reach a record high of 7.71 million.
That's a lot of people who've taken a huge drop in income. It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid ?0 -

Yvette Cooper giving the usual Brownite or should that be Ballsite spin conveniently going on about the claimant count and airbrushing out the Labour Force Survey thereby claiming that unemployment is 5% (there is now a massive disparity between the two- the claimant count figures are now worthless other than as an indicator of a trend). Of course, the BBC News24 journalists (pay £90k a year) oblige with the usual soft questions.

Hey, I'm just using the figures in Mr Monkfish's posts... if the official figures are wrong, blame the officials“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2010/jan/20/uk-unemployment-surprise-fallMr Archer quoted above hits the nail on the head: employment is falling.
This is what the ONS has to say about it:The employment rate for September to November 2009 washttp://www.statistics.gov.uk/cci/nugget.asp?ID=12
72.4 per cent. This is the lowest since winter 1996-97 and is down 0.1 on the quarter. The number of people in employment fell by 14,000 on the quarter to reach 28.92 million, the number of people in full-time employment fell by 113,000, and the number of people in part-time employment increased by 99,000 to reach a record high of 7.71 million. There were 1.03 million employees and self-employed people working part-time because they could not find a full-time job. This is the highest figure since records for this series began in 1992 and it is up 46,000 on the quarter.
Mandy and Cambell, don't try to spin this one please. There's no point. As the ONS puts it:The employment rate is the lowest since winter 1996-97.Happy chappy0 -
