summer house?

Just thinking about a garden house or should that be a log cabin? I have to say we do not have a big garden, but still thinking about it.
So my question is If you have one what do you use it for, is it worth having, ETC ETC

  • I always think Summar Houses are just something people sit in front of on a nice day and throw their patio furniture in on a not so nice day.

So essentially they are an elaborate storage sheds for garden furniture, which you sit in front of when the weather is nice (they get too hot and stuffy in the summer to sit inside).

Weve had our summerhouse for 3 years and its used everyday in the summer, we have insulated it and boarded it out and have a electric supply to it , a radio and tv too, we have a armchair and 2 seater sofa in it, its 8 X 6 , in the winter we store our garden furniture in. Its lovely to sit in and watch the birds come to the feeders to feed and watch the pond, we always take out newspapers in there to read we wouldnt be without ours, also nice when you have a BBQ to sit in, go for it and enjoy it.!! :D

One word of caution with "Log Cabins". The vast majority of them are constructed from "Whitewood" pine and not treated. Even if you do treat them they won't last that long as "Whitewood" Is non durable and will rot in a few years.......But that said they are relatively cheap compared to a quality made Summerhouse constructed from Western Red Cedar.....
  • I know it sounds silly, but not sure what I want to use it for yet!!!
For all of the above and maybe if extra family staying in summer to sleep in it.
I want a bit extra room at times
  • A friend of mine has one of these, its become a huge shed for them now. They just use it to store stuff.

We have a garden room rather than a summer house - fully insulated with an electric supply. We got it erected in the summer as a play room for the kids and have been very pleased with it.

As it's a bit more than a summerhouse it costs rather more - just under £8k for 12' x 10' internal dimensions.
  • We have one and indeed over winter it mainly becomes more of a storage area. However we have an insulated one and its made from tanalised wood so should last many years and is useable (with a little heat input in winter) throughout the year. Ours is 4.5m x 3m and has some boys toys as well as corner sofa, fridge etc

Its great when we have a BBQ and parties as somewhere else to sit if weather turns a bit chilly etc

You need to decide what you would use it for however and then decide on your budget as they vary massively from a few hundred pounds for the small ones at B&Q and similar up to many thousands for effectively home office type ones

    Shed of many uses.
We had ours put in a couple of years ago now, and it is the best idea we had for the family.
Store daughters kayaks on back wall on brackets, gym area and chest freezer in one third of floor space, two large sofas and a huge coffee table that we bought new, but didn't like in the lounge,in the middle third of the floor, so they are great for sleepovers in there, along with a spare mattress propped up the back wall too. Last third houses a huge desk, well glass dining table 2x1m, with all our camping gear stored underneath, plus floor to roof shelves with stereo and TV.
Hubby does a bit of work in there when it is too noisy in the house, all 3 kids have sleepovers in there, and birthday parties are very well attended due to them being 'shed raves'.
I start off my seedlings in there in feb/march and store frost tender plants iin there thru the winter. When the kids finally go, it will be used just as a summerhouse.
The only family members that won't go in there are the dogs!
We looked around for quite a while until we found one that suited us, and wish we had done this years ago.
