Thanks.Right so do you think it will be a bit cheeky saying we have an holiday booked for say the end of August so they have to honour it?
As i said they haven't asked if we have anything booked but when she applied there she had to give them her passport to copy for a CRB check. This was out of date and we had to say to them is that ok that it's out of date(only a couple of months) as we haven't renewed it yet because we haven't got anything planned to go away that's why we haven't renewed it.It was ok.
Maybe that's why they didn't ask but that was 5 or 6 weeks ago now so i could say we booked something about 3 or 4 weeks ago before she signed the contract?
Plus it was only the secretary we said that too not the manager or the care manager.

To be honest I think it would be better all round to be honest and say you have no holidays booked. If for any reason you lie and say you have holidays booked and they find out it wont do any good for your wifes employement!

I think if you had already booked a holiday the new company should already have been approached and made aware of it.

The best thing to do would just to carry on and not have any holidays - the new company may well mention holidays and that would be the best time to say well I havent had any etc!

Sorry i know i'm being a pest but another question;)

She starts her new job on the 17th and her last day with the current one is something like 2 or 3(not more than that) days before. Now the old place normally pay the staff for 23rd to 22nd on the month and this is usually paid towards the end of the month.I don't know if she will do this or not but the other half reckons she won't pay her until she pays the rest of the staff at the end of the month. Is it unreasonable to expect the money the day she leaves or around that time and not have to wait until the end of the month as she won't be a member of staff any longer?

    Thanks

To be honest I would of thought that she will or should get paid at the same time as the rest of the staff regardless of the fact that she is leaving. Is it a fairly big company?

When I worked in retail and when I had my contract terminated due to my ill health the contract was terminated in the middle of the month but I got all the pay due to me at the end of the month as normal.

In the end she has to wait a fortnight for the money but if she had been working there all month anyway she would only have got paid at the end of the month so to be honest I dont think she is losing anything just holding on til the end of the month

Thanks no she won't be losing anything i just thought it strange that she should have to wait even though she isn't working there any longer. What about if say her 4 weeks notice was up on the 5th of the month then she would have to wait nearly 4 weeks for it?

Well if she was still working up until the 5th of the month then yes she should have to wait almost 4 weeks for it. However in my case I was dismissed due to ill health on the 15th and they paid me at the end of that month 4 weeks notice pay - they backdated the notice in effect I guess - my contract was terminated on the 15th and my last pay was on the 31st.

The thing about payroll is that it's very often outsourced rather than inhouse, and even if it's inhouse making additional payments isn't trivial and costs money, so it's not unusual for payments only to be made once a month. That's if the money goes straight into her bank account. Even if it's paid by cheque they probably have controls in place which make getting an extra cheque difficult!

We underpaid someone last month and the only way to rectify it in a hurry was to write her a cheque. Fortunately we're very flexible and helpful where I work ...

Very surprised new job accepted an out of date passport! I do CRB checks and I wouldn't have accepted it. But then if it was only to check entitlement to work in the UK that might be different, certainly for CRB if you accept a passport it has to be valid!

Thanks for the reply. Not sure what the passport was for but with it being care would have thought a criminal check not an entitlement to work check?
Anyway they sent it off and we got the check back so it was accepted:)
I forgot to add earlier that yes it is a small company the owner has 2 care homes both holding about 20(though she hasn't got that many in either) people.
I emailed the new people and they said yes as she hasn't worked the 13 weeks yet this would have to be worked but he did also say speak to the manager/care manager there and see what they say so they might be flexible if they could get cover, who knows.
