Name Change charges

  • I renewed my passport in March and got married in September. I'm not prepared to fork out another £72 just to change my name. It's been bad enough having to do my name change on all my bills, banks, work etc and there are still some places I haven't informed as I can't be bothered with the hassle. I am known by my married name and I have only changed it where necessary.

    Yup, its bloody annoying to.

I changed my surname by deed poll in october 08 and had to change my passport and im getting married in June 2010, and will have to change it again.
I dont plan on doing it for a while though cause i dont travel anywhere! lol
  • We've just come back from honeymoon and I kept my old passport £77 to change the name when it still has 7 years is crazy!! You will need to make sure the name on the tickets is the same as on your passport though....I did find it confusing remembering which name I was supposted to give when chacking into hotels and felt stupid to get my name wrong!!

There is nothing in law to say that you have to change your last name to your husbands so therefore you may keep all legal documents in your birth last name (surname) . It is only if you need to prove you are married in some circumstancesyou need a marriage certificate. I have been married and now divorced and have always used my birth last name (Surname) and prefer to be called Ms.

What's with the "have to"? You don't have to change your name. You might choose to, or you might feel pressured to, but you don't have to.

Before my wedding went to hell and probably got cancelled - I was waiting things out with an expired passport (no intention of going overseas in the near future) and waiting till the wedding to pay for a new one in my new name.

Now none of that matters but I'm still not paying for one until the opportunity for a nice break in the sun presents itself.

  • You really have two choices:

When you book a flight/holiday make the booking in your maiden name so that your ticket/booking and passport match.

    or

Make the booking in your married name, but carry your original marriage certificate with you.

I did not change my passport until I had been married for 3 years, I always made sure I booked all my travel under my maiden name.

Statistically there must be something like a 50% chance that any individual will be divorced and back to their maiden name before a ten year passport expires...
  • i had 13 months left on mine when i got married but they said they would give me an extra 9 months, so i waited 4 months and then it wasnt wasting any months

u should be fine with your passport in your maiden name, the only problem i remember my friend having when she did that was when she tried to hire a car her driving license was in her married name and passport in her old name and they wouldnt let her even though she had her marriage certificate, certain countries are ok with it though
  • Just don't change it until your passport runs out, you just need to remember to book flight tickets in the name that appears on your passport.

This is crucial I know someone who was nearly refused entry to a flight because there was a misspelling on her passport that no one had noticed!
