Name Change charges

I have recently got married and went to the post office for forms for my drivers licence and passport - the woman said "you know they will charge you £77 for a totally new passport" - I have just paid for a new one as the old expired! is this true? this is totally unfair - anyone else had problems changing their name after marriage??

  • I'm afraid it is true. When my mum got married last year she had to pay for a whole new passport. She still had 5 years left on her old one, ad they dont even credit you back for those lost years
  • Do you legally have to change your passport? Could you book any trips away in your old name?

Thats exactly what I do! If you need your passport for ID purposes, take your marriage certificate with you and everywhere seems to be happy to accept that.

I would do that too!!!! I've got 8 years left on mine - not engaged or owt :rotfl: but if I did get married in those 8 years I would be hanging onto my passport!! Not to mention the fact that my pp photo is actually quite good (I spent a while on my hair and makeup for it ha ha), unlike the last one where I looked like a sulky teenager (which is pretty much what I was). PMSL!!!

  • I got married in feb this year and not changed passport yet because we cant justify the expense and went away in June...we will get it sorted next year. I have 5 years left to run on passport and it is unfair.

I am another sticking with traveling under maiden name. I got married abroad 6 months ago so I had to get a new passport to get to the wedding. (old one had 5 months to go on it - I needed 6 months left on it for ID purposes!)There is no way I am buying another one! OH thinks I should just get it changed but I see it as a waste of money.

I just don't see the need to change your passport. You should have plenty of other documents to verify your ID with?
In case you hadn't already worked it out - the entire global financial system is predicated on the assumption that you're an idiot:cool:

Hiya, I'm a newbie and thought I'd just comment as well. I married back in March and didn't bother changing my passport as I thought the charges were just outrageous! So I'm going to leave mine until it runs out. Not found anywhere where it says you cannot keep your maiden name on you passport (for legal reasons)... I'd leave it it if I were you...

I'd not long had mine when I got married either so still havent got a new one- will just change the name when i renew it. went on holiday in june with maiden name on tickets (got married 6 yrs ago lol) and no problems as long as the tickets is the same name as the passport.
