if thunderbird is an email program like microsoft outlook, then NO you cannot put hotmail on it. If you want to use a free email that you can use on an email client you need to find one that gives you POP3 settings.
If you want to be able to access your email from the internet ASWELL you can use a website called mail2web.com ... that picks up any email that hasnt been downloaded.
hope this helps

This extension will allow you to download your hotmail emails into Thunderbird.

You set it up as webmail and use the appropriate extensions.
If you wish to send emails you use your isp smtp outlet.0 -

There are no easy tutorials available.
I will write one and post it tomorrow, just pm me your email address and I will write one when I get up at around 5 a.m., I will do it before working and send it around 11 a.m.
In your pm tell me who your isp is, examples bt, aol etc.
Aswell if it's hotmail.co.uk or hotmail.com0 -

There's a manual step for loading into Thunderbird, right click on the extension and chose Save As. Then from Thunderbird go Tools->Extensions->Install. Make sure you also download and install the hotmail extension in the same way. Finally follow the instructions under account set-up on the webmail page.
As leesmithg says this won't let you send emails from thunderbird, your ISP may provide details of how to set it up (It can still appear as from hotmail) or maybe consider getting a gmail account.0 -
thankyou guys- im still having trouble, even just doing what hazza suggested.
leesmithg- thats a lovely offer- thankyou , but i'd feel awful if you were to take ages writing a tutorial for me
the only reason i want to put hotmail onto thunderbird is to recieve emails from msn contacts - not to send emails.
ill perhaps have another look tomorrow when im not so tired
thanks a million for your help guys  :TI don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

I asked the question about Hotmail/Thunderbird about six months ago. I never did manage to get it working. It seems that of you have a paid for Hotmail account you can get it to work but not for free Hotmail accounts:

Well live mail don't work in Thunderbird, for some reason when I was first beta testing it with a hotmail.co.uk account, just didn't work.
I changed the account back to ordinary (not beta) and it worked fine again in Thunderbird.
I would suggest not using live mail for Thunderbird accounts if you wish to receive the mail to your desktop.
If this has changed since 8 months ago, then stand on me.0
