Thunderbird and Hotmail

I would really like to try using Mozilla Thunderbird. My e-mail account is with Hotmail (LiveMail). The Thunderbird FAQ say that you cannot use Thunderbird to acccess Hotmail. However some Googling reveals that there are some extensions available to allow you to do this. None however appear on the extension page at the Thunderbird homepage.

Has anybody successfully maanged to get Hotmail and Thunderbird working together and what success did you have? I would also like to use a method that leaves my messages on the Hotmail server.

I use thunderbird for Hotmail aswell as gmail and pop3. Hotmail seems OK, but a couple of issues I am trying to resolve...main one being keeps downloading some of the same mails again (installed remove duplicates to combat this).

To access Hotmail, you need the webmail for Hotmail extention adding and I would suggest the Remove Duplicates extension.

If you are unable to find these, I can either email you both of them or try and dig out the url's I got them from.

Like I said, still a couple of issues, but just started using thunderbird for my hotmail a week or so back, so still fine tuning.

Forgot to mention...this is fine with Thunderbird, just need to check a setting on the server config within Thunderbird before connecting to your hotmail.

It's not working. I have installed exactly as it says on:
    http://webmail.mozdev.org/setup.html

However I keep getting a message that says:
"failed to connect to server http"

    then
"sending of password did not succeed. Mail Server Local Host responded: negative vibes from me@hotmail.com"

    Help! Any ideas?

Are you using the paid for version of Hotmail?

No - free version. Have recently switched to LiveMail which is the Beta replacement for Hotmail.

I did read that you could only set up TB with the paid for versions. However on the Mozilla forums this did not to seem to be an issue.

As far as I am aware, you can't use POP3 with the unpaid version of Hotmail, so I think that's your problem!

Shopbot, I had a similar problem, sometimes I keep getting negative vibes (if my wireless disconnects whilst t'bird is still open, quit and restart works for that.

Is it when bringing down mail or when trying to send mail?

I had a problem when 1st installing, the Outgoing Server (SMTP) was not setup with my hotmail account as the username.

Check by doing Tools -> Account Settings -> Outgoing Server (very bottom of left pane) -> Edit your Hotmail one and check the username has your Hotmail.

I have bog standard hotmail (would not pay for hotmail) and works fine for me.

Thanks, I stand corrected then. Sure that I've read it somewhere though!

    Thanks scorour.

Please can you confirm what settings you have in the outgoing server options box? (i.e description and server name sections?)
