Hi Andy,
How long has it been since you installed the shower this way? The reason I ask is that this is exactly how my shower was fitted - with an ext ply wall covering the pipes, etc on one side of the shower.
That was 7 years ago, I am now getting brown leaching from the ply into the grout which I am assuming is actually the glue seeping out of the ply now. It was great for 6 years.Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

To be honest I have only just done it about a week ago! But my friend who told me to do it said he has always done it (hes a joiner) and has never had a problem. suppose its how good the tiles are put on maybe? all i know is that its better than anything else. Imagine if you had plasterboard your tiles would be on the floor probably0

Plwood is not stable when wet
Use cement board if your flush or 12.5mm plasterboard and tank

EXTERIOR plywood is great when wet mate, hence (exterior) trust me mate it works a treat and you can tile straight onto it0

Either Aquapanel or hardibacker board
Membrane i would Homleux
Both available at the prices quoted from CTD
