Plaster board is so much easier to work with , and far cheaper
But ply wood is better in a wet environment
But you are going to tile
    But.................. go with the plasterboard.

i would use 12mm hardibacker for the wall hung areas, Plasterboard for rest

    tank where required

Make sure you have timber supports for the basin fixings, If your using a geberit type frame then make sure the wall and the frame is very secure, the slightest of movement will be catastrophic on the tiles

You cant use plasterboard if using a wall hung wc, Most frames are over 500 wide and the wc requires a good fix with no movement

Plywood in a wet environment is a big no.....Plasterboard, Hardibacker and tanking membrane would best and is not too expensive

    Tanking for a standard bath/shower £30+vat

    Hardibacker £8 per 1200x800mm

i used aquapanel in my bathroom.

    look here:
    http://www.knaufdrywall.co.uk/aquapanel/index.html

it is heavier than plasterboard but has the added benefit of not absorbing moisture but can be cut just like plasterboard.
You got to get through what you've got to go through to get what you want but you got to know what you want to get through what you got to go through.

normal PB is ok with tiling on top, but aquapanel is far better.

if plywood is used, it has to be marine quality which is very expensive.
normal plywood is useless in wet areas.
    Get some gorm.
  • found this advice on a tiling forum.. sound about right??

"all this Tilebacker, Hardie backer, Aquapanel is a water resistant board they all have to be added to to create a tanked wet room, shower or bathroom. Ordinary plaster board with a proper tanking solution such as Durabase wp is the answer. Waterproof tanking membranes on the roll are the secure method of creating a leak proof barrier between your tiles and your walls."

Just build your wall as you would, put plaster board on the outside and use exterior ply wood on the inside and tile straight onto that, done it myself and is perfect
  • even for a wall within a shower andy?

    Thanks

Yeh! Thats fine. I Used exterior ply for the inside and my quadrant shower is on that wall as it was easy to have plumbing and electrics into the false wall, and then obviously all tiled over straight onto the exterior ply wood and its fine. Plasterboard is pointless especially when wet! AND if you get it plastered thats even more pointless! But yeh thats fine mate
