What do they do now?

My son claims JSA for himself his partner and their two year old child. At the moment my son is going to college 16 hours a week. Yesterday he has been told that the dole have enroled him on a full time back to work scheme for 13 weeks. If he does not attend this scheme he will not be paid his benefit and if he does attend the scheme he will loss his college place and will not be able to sit the exam.
Does anyone know what they can do now? If he sign off JSA, what do they live on??

As you have said he will have to give up the college course and go on the back to work scheme or his benefit is likely to be sanctioned.

He should have been aware that he would have to stop the college course to go on a job centre scheme.

The point of JSA is that it's JOB SEEKERS' allowance - i.e. the person is supposed to be looking for work. If they had found him a job, how was he supposed to take it up if he was on a full-time college course?

sorry, not full-time, but 16 hours nevertheless means it would be pretty impossible he would be able to take on a job.

Thnak you all for your replys. If he signs off JSA to continue the college course, what benefits can he claim. As i said at the minute he claims for his partner and his daughter.

Slight problem they have to work to be entitled to working tax credits and from the little info the OP has posted they wouldn't be entitled to Income support.

    What is Income Support?

This is extra money to help people on a low income.
It is for people who don't have to sign on as unemployed.
This could be if you are:
    • sick or disabled
    • a lone parent responsible for a child under 12 years of age
    • a carer, or
    • registered blind.

They do get child tax credit and housing benefit. His partner stays at home to look after the child.
If he stops claiming JSA can his partner claim benefits for herself and the child while living with him?
