What do they do now?

They do get child tax credit and housing benefit. His partner stays at home to look after the child.
If he stops claiming JSA can his partner claim benefits for herself and the child while living with him?
If he's only at college for 16 hours, can't your son look after his child while his partner works - using childcare for the hours he's actually in college?0 -
I would have thought they will be entitled to nothing extra. They already have a joint JSA claim plus CTB. Plus Housing benefits
Sorry i may have misunderstood. Does he want to stop his JSA claim in order to complete his college course and his girlfriend claim just for herself?0 -
16 hours is full-time for benefit purposes.
'tisn't.
If it were then the OPs son would not be able to receive JSA.
OP, I'm not familiar with the names of these things, is it a new deal/employment program type thing? If claimants are studying P/T to help their chances of getting work or advancing their
careers, they usually have good cause for refusing or neglecting a reasonable
opportunity of a place on a training scheme or employment programme. But the DM
should take into account the type of course and hours of attendance. If the claimant
1. was going to college etc for only a few hours a week (for example to prepare
to re-sit exams which had been failed) and
2. could arrange to go to college etc in the evening
the claimant will not have good cause. But the claimant will have good cause if it is
necessary to go to college etc frequently to complete a specific course to improve
the chances of getting work. Where a claimant is doing other training or part time
study, a doubt about availability may arise. This question should be decided before
the DM considers the sanction question, if it is referred for a decision.0 -
Once again thank you for all the replys. I am sorry it seems to take me so long to come back to answer your questions, i am having computer problems.
My son does want to come of JSA to finish his college course. He is hoping that with good results he will be able to go to university. He is more than willing to look after his child when he is not at college, and i can look after the child at weekends. His partner has been looking for work but cannot seem to find any.
Yes Dookar it is a NEW DEAL programme that they want him to go on.
When he finishes his college course it will give him a better chance of finding a job.
Is it possible for his partner to claim benefit for her self and the child whilst living with him? What benefit would she claim? Would it be JSA or IS?0 -
Definatly not IS as thats for single parents0
-
Is she actively looking for work?0
-
'tisn't.
Er, it is. I was at college last year we got told that the reason why our course is less than 16 hours is because there are some people who are on benefits, which they can't get if they were at college full-time.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

Yes but in these circumstances the only way she could claim it would be as a single parent but she isnt so therefor IS isnt an option0
