Can I cancel a personal cheque for faulty window in house?

Hi Guys
I got 2 windows fitted last friday. One of the windows needs the wooden cill taken back out as the cill has a big chip taken out where a nail was put through and I larger piece of white frame needs to put outside to finish the window.
The 2nd window has a bend in the frame and the black rubber is not sitting against the window.
The fitter is coming back tonight to fix the wooden cill and look at the other window.
Would I be able to cancel the cheque that I gave them last friday for the full amount and then issue another cheque for the works already done?
I really want to keep a retainer until the work is finished properly.
Any advice would be appreciated.
I have a £100 cheque guarantee card from Bank of Scotland - reward current account.
Thanks

Your bank might charge you to cancel a cheque so you'd be wise to check that first or to see if it has been banked yet. If it hasn't been banked, could you ask the fitter for it back and then re-issue another of a lesser value until all the work is complete?0

If you used the cheque guarantee card, you'll have problems cancelling the cheque.0

How much was the cheque for?
If it was over £100 the whole cheque is un-guaranteed and you should be able to stop it, under £100 you won't.

Absolutely not and if the tradesman incurrs fees as a result of the cheque bouncing he'll be after you for them. You can't just cancel payment just like that and he's coming back to fix the work so give him a chance.0

Hi guys
Thanks for all your thoughts. I have spoken to the Bank. Apparently the cheque is not guaranteed unless the card number is written on the back of the cheque.
I have spoken to the owner of the company again and he has given reassurances that the work will be completed satisfactorily.
We will need to wait and see what is said tonight.
I just wanted abit of leverage incase we have problems getting them to come back and fix them properly.

Make sure you get some good pictures that's your best bit of leverage.0
