move the times, you say you had been getting up every 4 hours, make it 4 and a half, then 5, add 30 mins or an hour.
Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?

Give the puppy a bit more room in the cage. It will not want to "go" in the cage and will soon learn but it is still very young.

Don't get up the middle of the night.
  • Like some of the posters on here I also didnt' set the alarm, just waited for pup to cry or bark and would then get up to let her go out.. just picked her up and put her outside.. stood with her while she went and put her back to bed. No fuss, no talking and if she hadn't gone within 5 mins then back to bed anyway. Worked for me during the night and I had terrible problems with toilet training as she was going toilet all the time and everywhere she could! Good luck with it all.

  • Thanks to everyone for all the advice. She is normally quite good through the day although I have noticed she does wee a lot. I now only reward the occassional wee when she goes out, think perhaps we had excessive wees due to getting a treat for them.

I think I will also adjust her mealtimes slightly. When is the best time to feed her last meal of the day. At the moment I feed her at 20.00 hours and settle her down for the night somewhere between 22.00-23.00. Should I feed her earlier than that?

That depends how many feeds a day she is on. If still four then its difficult to fit them all in sometimes but 8 is a little late.
Do you settle her at 11 ish then go to bed yourself straightaway? Ours have puppy bed time at 11-ish but we generally go to bed a couple of hours later than that, so we put them out before we go to bed thus (hopefully) negating the need for another wee during the night.
TBH, if she's going to bed at 10 thats a long time for her to wait and some puppies just take longer than others, bit like kids and potty training. Also, if she's been weeing a lot during the day, it sounds like either her bladder control isn't that good yet or she's just so used to going very often that shes formed a habit of it.

With our puppy I would put her to bed at 10 and then have to get up at 3 to let her out. Slowly I made that time a little later each day over the course of a few weeks until she was sleeping through until 6 or 7. If she cried, I would ignore her until the time I had decided on and she soon got used to it.

I feed her 3 times a day. 8.30, 14.00 & 20.00. I read somewhere that they give there puppy its last feed at 16.00, then nothing until 8.30 the next day. It seems a long gap to me, surely puppy will be hungry.

At 11 weeks old she needs to eat in the evening so 8pm or a little later is fine.

You don't want her waking in the night because she is hungry.
