Utility Warehouse warning

After much research on forums etc and with the Which stamp of approval for the utilities warehouse Broadcall service, we decided to join up for Broadband, phone gas and electric supply. There are some things they DON'T tell you....

On the whole their customer service is appalling AND you get charged for phone calls to their cust service line. The whole affair has been painful in the extreme. We were told wildly different things re connection times, speeds, and other terms of service by differrent operators. Initially, we were told connection would take max 10 days "but 90% are done in 2 or 3..." Of course, ours was 10 days ... and then no broadband .. " ahh yes that takes an extra ten days or so..." 10 days later - Nothing " ahh yes, we meant 10 WORKING days.." But by the time I got through to their call cenntre - (closes at 5;30 or so and really often just engaged!!!) more than 10 working days had elapsed. "aah yes - but we mention that in our terms.." like hell they do!

So after more than a month, eventually broadband (at nowhere near the quoted speed.....) I have had to buy several more odd days and weeks of mobile broadband as kept being lead to beleive that hook up was just around the corner. Had I been told it would take so long I would just have bought a months access outright at much cheper cost. When pointing this to Utilities Warehouse, and asking to have the first month free in recognition of the problems and the breach of their stated connection times, I have had 3 promises to be called back over more than 2 weeks with no reply.

So in all, if you get connected promptly, the service may be fine. BUT if you have to deal with cust service, expect it to be protracted, painful, pointless and to be told 5 different stories by 4 different operators who promise the world and deliver absolutely nothing - AND be charged for the privilege...

Sadly its a fact of life that sometimes things go wrong.
When I moved from Orange to Sky I was left without broadband for three months.
You will see other horror stories about other ISPs.
Often its not the ISPs fault as they have to get work done by BT as they do not allow 3rd parties to work in their exchanges.
When they get it wrong as in your case the ISP has to arrange for them to fix it.
With UW you are dealing with Opal telecom (Carphone Warhouse) who deal with BT.

Just goes to prove that Which is a waste of space.
  • I agree with Inactive, which used to be a good publication (or I was naive) but went downhill several years ago.
As to UW ...just do a search on this site to get the general opinion of them...I wouldn't touch them with yours!

But you have to deal with UW Customer Service and i read on this forum that UW use more then one supplier of broadband.

They have a thread devoted to them.

I'm aware of this I was pointing out that there are a number of layers to go through.

You can always check who your ISP is
