Apologies in advance because this is a bit of a 'blonde' question Wink but how can you tell how many attempts have been made etc please? Where do you look to find out?

I run Zonealarm Pro. On the control panel for this I have a section called 'alerts and logs' . This shows all the medium and high rated attempts at access for my machine.

I'll take a look at their site. It was one of those questions I had to ask because it was bugging me (no pun intended ;) ), but I won't download anything just in case all of these programmes I've bought or downloaded start conflicting with each other.

    Many thanks.

ZoneAlarm basic has the same functionality (to some degree):

Double-click the ZA icon in the System Tray, and select the 'Alerts & Logs' tab on the left, then the 'Log Viewer' tab at the top right.

And as the blurb at the top of this page says, there is no such thing as a stupid question. If the OP had bothered to select brain before opening mouth he may not have dug himself into such a large hole. As it is the only help he gets from me is a larger spade! ;)

As a footnote to my previous posts, I'd better say I took another look at my Norton's Anti-virus. It does show threats and other malicious activities.

Thought I'd clear that up in case I misled anyone else.

You would do well to clear all the malware and other garbage out of your system.

I would suggest starting a new thread and posting what your Norton has found. I am sure someone will help you clean things up and reduce the risk to your system.

Thanks again. I'll run Giant and quarantine, if that's the best thing (?) what it finds.

Not sure it's worth starting a new thread tbh. Well not for me anyway - I can't always follow what people try (desperately!) to explain to me, but there's 2 Adware showing on Norton's. Both of which were as a result of the MyWay Websearch/Smiley Central download I think.

They both take me to the Symantecs site and I think (?) are listed as low risk. Having said that, I've just looked again and one appeared as "Not Found"? I'll have to look again ;)

But one comes with a big red warning sign recommending backing up registry etc, something I'd rather leave to a techie who can go through it with me here (then I can whack him one of there's any permanent data loss ;))
  • Remeber software firewalls like zone alarm report a lot of false positives about "attacks". Many things they report are valid communication but ZA and others report it as malicious.
You will need somethign more powerful to correctly identify attempts at Intrusion detection. However thats not to sy it doesnt serve a purpose just dont get too excited about all of ZA reports

I have happily been using PC cillin 2000 since 2001 using a free disk given to me by the Halifax. You lot keep going on about how it is very important to have a firewall  so I downloaded that free one you talk about (zonealarm). Anyway the firewall stopped my antivirus from downloadeing the latest pattern updates and I've now got rid of the firewall.

Due to the firewall messing up my antivirus (pc-cillin) I had to uninstall PC cillin. The problem is I put the disk in and went to the pc-cillin website and they say on there that PC-cillin 2000 has been discontinued. I'm now downloading avast as I speak but I am very annoyed because I was very happy with PC-cillin >:(

So thanks alot moneysavers for ruining my antivirus protection. >:(

So I take it you didn't get the SP2 pack from Microsoft which includes its own firewall ???.

In Zone Alarms defence I think it is fantastic free ware and haven't heard if any problems that haven't been solved using it ;)

Also Ijack64 are you not being a bit silly on this as you did start this thread on Dec 11th HERE

    And HERE

Why has it took you so long to come back on this one. ???
  • Heh I sense paranoia. Firewalls are not crucial but they help if you're not very pc savy.
