You lot have ruined my antivirus!!!!!!!!!!!

Options
I have happily been using PC cillin 2000 since 2001 using a free disk given to me by the Halifax. You lot keep going on about how it is very important to have a firewall so I downloaded that free one you talk about (zonealarm). Anyway the firewall stopped my antivirus from downloadeing the latest pattern updates and I've now got rid of the firewall.

Due to the firewall messing up my antivirus (pc-cillin) I had to uninstall PC cillin. The problem is I put the disk in and went to the pc-cillin website and they say on there that PC-cillin 2000 has been discontinued. I'm now downloading avast as I speak but I am very annoyed because I was very happy with PC-cillin >:(

So thanks alot moneysavers for ruining my antivirus protection. >:(

So YOU load something onto YOUR PC 'cos you heard others talking about it, then YOU blame those others 'cos your out-of date software doesn't work any more?

This IS a troll, right?? ::)

Anyhow, since Trend ended support, including pattern updates, for PC-cillin 2000 in June 2004, the program is of very limited use in 2005 and beyond. You really ought to learn a little about the subject before jumping in with both feet and criticising those who tend to help others or blame them for your own ineptitude.

And has no-one told you of the way to get a free upgrade to PC-cillin internet Security 2005/version 12?? No?? Shame. Though I somehow doubt anyone will now. Welcome to your bed - you have made it, now lie on it.

I would welcome to hear of your active and constructive response to the threat of computer viruses, spyware, trojans and general malware. You could be a source of an infection rather than just an innocent victim unless you adopt the 'up to date' necessary precautions. This need not cost you a penny.
The net is a shared resource and you have to be aware that any computer on it is a target for programs and people with evil designs.
A firewall is a good place to start.

The advice about a firewall is not only good advice, it's absolutely crucial nowadays on the net. Anyone that choses to go on the internet without a firewall is opening their computer to any hacker that decides to look at their machine. Just out of interest, I looked at my firewall log for the last two days. I've had 469 attempts at access, including 126 that were rated as high security attempts.

When a firewall is installed, you need to tell the firewall which programs you want to access the internet. This means that every legal program needs permission from you. Nobody else can advise on this, as only the person whose computer it is knows what they use.

It's very naughty to blame others because you didn't read how to use zonealarm properly. The advice you read on the need for it was spot on. Without a firewall your computer can be used by any malicious hacker to send out spam or launch attacks on web sites. You really wouldn't have a clue this is happening unless you have some way of controlling access in and out of your computer. This is what a firewall does. Most hackers don't use a virus to enter your machine, so you can have all the anti virus programs in the world, they won't stop hacking attempts.

It's easy to think that 'my' machine wont be chosen by hackers. The fact is, scanning programs nowadays can scan tens of thousands of machines with one click. The hacker only has to run a port scan then get a list of results for open computers. After this you will be helpless against them if you can't stop them getting into your computer .

Try this stealth test to give yourself an idea of how open your machine is to the internet. http://www.pcflank.com/scanner1s.htm

PS In the time I've been typing this reply, my firewall has blocked 11 attempts to access my machine. 5 medium rated and 6 high rated attempts.

Your anti virus was out of date anyway.
Search google for free AVG and zonealarm firewall and install both.
And don`t blame others for your own actions!

A firewall is essential. If you'd let your anti-virus download it's updates by clicking allow in the pop-up from ZA that came up when it tried to connect then you'd have had them (if they hadn't been discontinued).

And I don't see why you uninstalled it. ZA didn't change the configuration of your Anti-Virus but it did block access to the web by it as you requested it to do.

Apologies in advance because this is a bit of a 'blonde' question ;) but how can you tell how many attempts have been made etc please? Where do you look to find out?

I've got Nortons Anti-Virus (which picks up 2 spywares (same ones) every day, but waiting for someone more technical than me to get rid of them.

Giant picks up approximately 11 low risk spyware thingy's.

Somewhere on the pc there's another programme I downloaded and paid for from an American site (can't find it! :o) so could I be getting hacked and not know about it?

Apologies again if it seems like a dumb question, but I'm sure I'm not the only person that's a technophobe.

P.S. I might not always ask many questions in this section, but I read a lot. I'm not sure if the OP was a wind up but just wanted to say I thing you guys and girls do a fantastic job. Thanks.
